Primary Responsibilities:

Monitor expenditures during design and construction and prepare reports of costs to date for ongoing work, projected costs at completion, and anticipated outlays over the life of the project.Observe construction and maintenance activities, perform time and method studies, and make recommendations for process improvement.Prepare or check pay estimates for work performed on various contracts using measured work quantities or similar methods.Track funds received for projects from grants, deposits, or other revenue, prepare reports of cost versus revenue, and assist accounting personnel with timely billing on projects.Review submittals from contractors for conformance with contract requirements, respond to requests for information, and maintain logs, submittals, requests for information, correspondence, and other contract-related documents.Assist in developing plans for construction and maintenance activities using inspection and other measurement and condition data, and prepare schedules for design, construction, and maintenance projects using critical path scheduling techniques (CPM).Calculate project material requirements, prepare bid packages from standard plans and specifications, prepare purchasing requisitions, track material procurements, and record material installation locations.Maintain a culture of safety by participating in safety committee activities, reviewing work plans for compliance with safe operating practices, and making observations of work activities.Prepare plans and specifications for job order contracts and small contract packages using standard plans and specifications and other industry standards.Prepare or review designs of temporary structures for construction; prepare or review work plans for construction work involving railroad track and related facilities and structures, including surveying and layout.Prepare correspondence to contractors, consultants, agencies, and other railroads to address engineering and construction topics.Perform other duties as required.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

Proficient at reading/interpreting plans, specifications, and shop drawings.Perform field inspection of contractor operations to ensure compliance with contract documents.Prepare daily and weekly reports on work accomplished by contractors, review periodic pay estimates for accuracy with contractors.Prepare sketches and assemble data for Field Engineers to use in making changes to the project.Train Rail Inspector-In-Training.

 

Position Requirements:

Civil Engineering degree plus 5 years of engineering experience in the construction of major railroad projects, 2 years of which were on a major commuter rail project; OR a High School Diploma or GED plus a minimum of 15 years of responsible railroad maintenance and/or construction experience on transit or freight rail projects, 2 years of which were on a major commuter rail project.Construction, inspection, and maintenance experience for track structure, embankment fill, drainage, and general railroad construction practices.Knowledge and experience with applicable Federal laws and regulations related to railroad construction and maintenance.

 

Certification Requirements:

Qualified Track Inspector as defined by the Federal Railroad Administration – 49 CFR Part 213.305 (a), (b), and (c).

The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the California Pay Transparency Law.  Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience. Salary range: $98,861-$164,725
