Senior Underwriter – Miscellaneous Professional Liability

We are looking for an experienced underwriter to join our Miscellaneous Professional Liability (MPL) underwriting team. This position will be located in Walnut Creek, CA, Encino, CA, or Remote-CA, and will report to the Director, MPL.

Our MPL products are designed to provide coverage for specified professionals across a wide variety of business sectors. This includes Real Estate, Insurance Agents/Brokers, and other Miscellaneous Professionals. The team is located in several offices across the country with decades of combined experience.

Position Overview

This is a market-facing production underwriting role on a close-knit team of highly motivated and productive individuals. Under supervision, you will be reviewing insurance applications to evaluate, classify, and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing. Establishes maintains, and develops agency and/or broker relationships. The position has defined underwriting authority and business development responsibility. Provides underwriting in single or multiple areas of liability, property, or special contingency coverage.

Key Responsibilities

Evaluate new and renewal policy applications and related documents to classify and assess each risk, determine acceptability, assign ratings, indicate endorsements and limits, and determine appropriate pricing.Contact and respond to verbal and written inquiries from brokers within a designated timeframe to provide appropriate information and serve as an underwriting resource.Create and maintain all documentation (physical and electronic), including new and renewal bound files, underwriting worksheets, documentation of phone conversations, and other key documents according to departmental guidelines.Adhere to all company underwriting authority directives, underwriting guidelines, and other applicable company policies and procedures.Approve or deny within given authority or recommend approval or denial to a higher authority.Cultivate relationships with internal and external contacts to facilitate the underwriting process, promote business development, and remain abreast of industry trends.Serve as a resource to other departmental staff with regard to underwriting procedures and other departmental guidelines.

Experience & Education

A 4-year BA/BS degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, a related field, or the equivalent education and/or experienceStudies toward attaining a Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), or equivalent insurance designation depending on specialty areaKnowledgeable of industry changes, legal updates, and technical developments related to applicable areas of the Company’s business to proactively respond to changing business environmentAdvanced organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneouslySolid written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacyIntermediate proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office packages (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)Retail and wholesale underwriting experienceEnjoys marketing and building relationships

For candidates working in person or remotely in the following locations, the reasonable pay range for this specific position is Encino, CA, and Walnut Creek, CA, $87,300 - $125,600 annually.   The salary offered for this specific position is based on a number of legitimate, non-discriminatory factors set by the Company.
