Stantec is seeking a Senior Water Resource Engineer for our Arizona Operations office in Chandler. Our work focuses on surface water studies, floodplain delineation studies, master plans, the design of flood mitigation facilities and hydraulic designs for dam and levee features such as spillways. Our team offers the opportunity to execute advanced surface water modeling and the design of major surface water drainage systems and structures.
Your role will be to work independently on projects or as a team member on large projects. The projects may be complex, multi-disciplinary, and diverse in scope. You will perform a variety of complex tasks which may include hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, field work, civil engineering design, and coordination of tasks and personnel. Working in a team environment is considered essential. Your home office will be in Chandler, Arizona. While most of the work is anticipated in Arizona and the western US, projects may also be in other geographies where Stantec offers services.
Perform complex hydrologic and hydraulic studies, 1D and 2D hydraulic investigations, flood risk analysis, spillway sizing and dam break analysis.
Work with senior team members undertaking technical delivery of flood risk projects for local government agency and national agencies such as FEMA
Provide technical oversight / mentorship of junior staff
Developing project budgets and scopes of work for various hydrologic and hydraulic tasks/projects
Serve as a primary contact to clients; internally and externally
May work on multiple projects and responsible for projects of average complexity/size.
Serves as Engineer-of-Record dependent on position level.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, as well as relevant discipline software programs, which include FLO-2D, HEC-RAS (1D & 2D), HEC-1, PCSWMM, StormCAD, WaterCAD, (or other modeling software).
Perform more complex engineering design tasks on assigned projects under supervision of the Project Technical Lead or Project Manager, including engineering drawings, engineering reports, presentations, and required by regulatory agencies.
Engage in the development of design through sketches, models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
Prepare and revise documentation in various civil design phases including site plans, utility plan/profiles, grading plans, cross sections, diagrams, and details.
Lead or participate in project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owners and contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors.
Involved in the permitting process of projects, which may require meetings with clients, contractors, reviewing agency personnel and governing entities.
Manage and lead other team members while working on projects; complete tasks and delegate specific project tasks to other team members, as appropriate.
Assist senior engineers/designers with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.
May lead the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents.
Prepare contract documents for construction (i.e., engineering drawings and specifications).
Participate in constructability review.
Conduct quality assurance and quality control on own projects.
Assist in the development of new standards and specifications for the discipline.
Prepare portions of engineering project proposals, change orders, client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects.
May support the water resources team in providing services during construction that can include submittal reviews, responses to requests for information, contract document
May lead marketing and business development for our Water business line and dam/flood control sector. Your Capabilities and Credentials
Experience with FEMA-type floodplain mapping, dams, levees or other flood retarding structures is considered a plus.
A well-developed understanding of general concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, geotechnical engineering, survey, storm water/drainage design, road drainage design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
Possess excellent time management skills by having a thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
An understanding of codes, policies, guidelines, and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.
An understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
Strong knowledge of civil systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative brainstorming and critical thought.
Possesses team leadership skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong presentation and interview skills are preferred.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent.
Licensed Professional Engineer, dependent on position level.
Minimum of 10-15 years of experience is preferred.
Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
