Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an experienced water resources scientist/engineer to join our multidisciplinary team in Sacramento, California. You will apply and grow your understanding of hydrology, water resources planning and management, and/or water system operations to help answer our clients’ water resources management questions.

We’re looking for inquisitive professionals who are passionate about water and bring experience in hydrologic and water operational studies using innovative technical approaches and analytical tools. Our Water Resources team in Sacramento tackles water problems throughout California and the western US, from drought resilience to climate change vulnerability assessments to re-operation of large integrated water systems for multipurpose uses. This role will support water resources planning and management projects for municipal, regional, state, and federal water-related agencies and organizations throughout California and the western US. As the successful candidate, you will use your technical abilities to assist in a wide variety of projects in a dynamic planning and design team setting. Your Key Responsibilities

As a member of our Water Resources team, you will help formulate technical approaches and conduct analyses to answer key questions about how we can best manage our limited water resources. This includes: 

Support project management activities associated with the planning and execution of multi-disciplinary water resources planning and engineering projects
Collection and analysis of hydrologic, meteorological, operational, and other datasets
Hydrologic and operational modeling of watersheds and water systems under existing and future conditions, including assessments of the impacts of climate change on watersheds and flows, water system operations, water budgets, and water supplies.
Evaluation of the impacts of proposed new water infrastructure (reservoirs, groundwater banks, conveyance facilities, etc.), water system operational changes, and water policy changes on water supplies, water quality, water allocation, hydropower, ecosystem needs, and river flows.
Evaluation of river flow conditions to meet a variety of needs, including environmental, municipal, and industrial, agricultural, recreational, energy, and others.
Analysis of water resources management issues and infrastructure at local, regional, and statewide scales.
Concise and creative presentation, documentation, and visualization of modeling and analytical outputs to clients, local, state, and federal agencies, regulators, and other interested parties.   Your Capabilities and Credentials
Current knowledge of water resources challenges and opportunities, water management facilities, water programs, and water infrastructure operations in the Western US
Experience conducting numerical modeling and analysis to support complex water resources planning and management projects for public/government sector clients; Areas of specialty may include hydrologic modeling, climate change data analysis, integrated water management studies, water allocation modeling, conjunctive use, water banking, water supply reliability studies, water transfers, demand management and shortage policies, and/or water conservation.  Demonstrated ability working in interdisciplinary settings and directing individuals or small teams to complete modeling and analytical tasks. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technical issues to varied audiences through public presentations and development of technical reports.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in civil/environmental engineering, water resources engineering, hydrology, or a related field required.
Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in civil/environmental engineering, water resources engineering, hydrology, or a related field preferred.
10 or more years of relevant professional or academic (graduate level) experience in water resources studies and analysis.
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of California or other professional licensure preferred.  
Experience using and interpreting the outputs of analytical tools commonly used in water resources management studies, including as CALSIM/WRIMS, WEAP, MODFLOW, HEC-suite, and ad-hoc spreadsheet tools.
Experience with programming languages (Python, R, or MATLAB) for data analysis, post-processing, and visualization.

Typical office environment working with computers and sitting at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
