Senior Weapon System Engineer
Applied Physics Laboratory
Description Are you interested in contributing to the design and advancement of weapon systems and architectures vital to our national defense? If so, we 're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL! The Weapon Systems Engineering group is seeking a senior technical professional to help us address sophisticated engineering challenges for advanced missile defense systems. We are a multi-disciplinary team of experts who increase the versatility of real-world missile systems, perform laboratory / field testing, conduct in-depth data analysis, and present findings to sponsors and the warfighter. Our group promotes professional growth, a balanced life, and diversity of thought. As a Senior Weapon Systems Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to help conceive, assess, and improve guided missile systems through a systems engineering process that includes the use of high-fidelity and mixed-fidelity simulations and statistical analysis tools. You will: Evaluate the mission effectiveness of a number of existing and future interceptor systems, adapting to constantly evolving threats in both theater and homeland defense. Identify limiting factors to systems-of-systems performance using a multitude of guided weapon simulations as well as determine software and hardware enhancements that will expand weapon systems capability. Develop requirements and evaluation criteria for evolving interceptor designs to engineer emerging mission areas using a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach. Present key findings to various government sponsors including the U.S. Navy and the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), among others. Become a technical authority for the programs we support, a mentor to junior staff, and make an impact on the defensive systems that keep our warfighters safe! Qualifications You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you... Have a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering field, Math or Physics. Have 5+ years of professional experience in performing analysis, design trades, and studies of kinematic interceptors or experience with medium or high fidelity scientific simulations. Demonstrated skills in systems engineering. Experience with digital engineering techniques such as MBSE, and SysML tools like Cameo EA and familiarity with existing architectural constructs like UAFML and DODAAF 2.0 is desired. Demonstrated skill with systems-of-systems simulation development. Experience with AFSIM, EADSIM, and/or similar simulation frameworks is desired. Strong communication skills needed to interact with government sponsors through both written and verbal communications. Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and ultimately a Top Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. Special Working Conditions : Occasional travel to sponsor, contractor, or government facilities for meetings and reviews. Occasional support of test events involving extended hours, travel aboard ships and travel to field sites. Why Work at APL?
