Senior Wildlife Biologist (Field Based)

ERM is hiring a Senior Wildlife Biologist in Wood Buffalo, Alberta looking to advance their career with a global environmental leader, and to make a significant impact in successfully implementing ERM's global strategy. This is a full time (40+ hours a week) limited term role with a duration of 1 year renewable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide regulatory leadership for incidents, including writing clear follow-up letters, forms, and reports to regulators, as required by legislation, and track environmental incidents.Manage and coordinate environmental contractors and consultants who conduct surveys and gather data at the site.Conduct internal inspections in order to improve environmental compliance.Coordinate inspections, investigations, and site visits by regulators at the site.Obtain short term operational authorizations and provide notice of outages and operational changes to Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulators, as necessary for the continued operation of the plant.Train operational staff regarding regulatory compliance and the continuing importance of environmental protection in a cost constrained production setting.Record, file, interpret and disseminate regulatory correspondence.Work with client teams on environmental reports, risks and projects.Develop, update, and facilitate training for various environmental programs/initiatives.

Wildlife Management & Monitoring

Secure Federal permits and Provincial research and collection licenses and Damage Control Licenses for all leases, including required annual reporting.Secure general wildlife, bear, and applicable research hazing permits; annual toad relocation approval; Damage Control licenses and Damage and Danger permits.Support teams with wildlife and human interaction and incidents, set up offsets required, and obtain approvals to operate within wildlife offsets; maintain ongoing communication with teams regarding wildlife protection responsibilities.Review and manage wildlife incidents and confirm appropriate actions are completed.Manage wildlife sweeps; achieve regulatory compliance when species of concern are identified, develop mitigation plans and work with teams in compliance with plans.Interface with Alberta Environment & Protected Areas and Fish & Wildlife officers; interface with teams and support groups to provide guidance for proactive wildlife protection; and communicate regulatory information and updates to teams.Collect and review all wildlife sweep data and submit to government; complete Wildlife Performance report and submit to the regulator.Participate in meetings to provide guidance for proactive wildlife protection; provide day-to-day advice for compliance to wildlife regulations and industry standards.Prepare and submit OSBCMP protocol, collection of data, QA/QC of data and final reportAttend Oil Sand Bird Contact Monitoring (OSBTT) regional meetings; support research and development with OSBTT studies.Direct and orient monitoring program contractor. Work with tailings leaders to ensure proper coordination and oversight.Weekly stewardship of Tailings & Lease Development to ensure OSBCMP compliance.

Regulatory Inspections & Performance Measures

Coordinate and complete regulatory environmental inspections; complete pre-inspections and train operations support people; coordinate completion of inspection actions and information requests. Assess incidents for potential reportable non-compliance and/or environmental impact; review, track, and trend analysis of incidents ensuring consistent reporting and classification for weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and stewardship.

REQUIREMENTS:

Post-secondary degree or diploma in biological or environmental sciences, or related field.Professional accreditation in Alberta (i.e., P. Biol.) or working toward accreditation.5+ years of relevant industry environmental experience.Strong experience and knowledge of oil sands and industrial operations.Experience in an environmental program area that involves operations and providing guidance on a day-to-day basis to management and/or operations personnel.The ability to be onsite from Monday through Thursdays, with occasional flexibility for schedule accommodations.The ability to anticipate potential problems and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions, as well as having a strong sense of accountability.The ability to remain organized and able to self-prioritize work and handle multiple tasks / request from a variety of people.A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.Completion of pre-site access alcohol and drug testing in accordance with ERM and/or client policies.
