We are seeking a skilled and experienced Senior System Administrator to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting computer systems, and infrastructure across MITRE Corporation’s laboratory environments. This includes Windows administration, development of automation tools and code, Ansible, Splunk, Active Directory, networking, compliance, NIST 800.171, backup technologies and practice, and VMWare. Familiarity with commercial utility cloud providers like Azure and AWS is preferred. The Senior System Administrator will work closely with other IT staff to ensure the smooth operation of our systems and networks and will provide technical leadership and guidance to junior team members.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Manage and maintain Windows-based computer systems, including installation, configuration, patching, and security.

Automate routine tasks using Ansible, including deployment, orchestration, and management of servers, applications, and services.

Assist when needed in the maintenance and operations of network infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls, and access points.

Ensure compliance with standards such as NIST 800.171 and CMMC Levels 1 and 2 and maintain accurate documentation of security controls and procedures.

Implement and manage backups software to ensure the safety and integrity of our data.

Work closely with laboratory staff to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to computer systems, applications, networks, and infrastructure.

Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior IT staff and participate in training and mentoring programs as needed.

Help design next-generation IT services and infrastructure based on emerging AI and Cloud technologies and trends in system administration and make recommendations for improving IT infrastructure.

Basic Qualifications:

Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

Must be able to adapt to new technology and practices and work in a diverse, dynamic lab R&D environment.

Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including experience resolving complex technical issues related to computer systems, networks, and infrastructure.

Deep experience with general system administration with a focus on Windows and Active Directory.

Experience with system hardening tools and practices, CIS Benchmarks, etc.

Understanding of scripting languages like PowerShell, Shell (Bash, etc.), and Python, and Ansible.

This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

Highly adaptable and flexible candidate with excellent time management and interpersonal skills and strong communication abilities.

Strong understanding of security principles and practices, including NIST 800.171 and CMMC Level 1, 2.

Windows administration skills are required but a generalist approach including Linux and cloud (Azure/AWS) strongly preferred.

Familiarity with networking protocols and technologies, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and firewalls.
