Job Description

Norfolk Southern Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, seeks an energetic programmer with proficiency in the area of application development and support.  This applicant must be highly motivated to provide system support, meet project deadlines and to handle technology challenges. The Norfolk Southern Information Technology Department is searching for a qualified candidate to join a dynamic project team that supports and develops systems for intermodal rail operations.    

 

This position provides the opportunity for the individual to be involved in innovative systems development efforts to optimize intermodal rail operations and to work closely with end-users who are engaged in the fastest growing rail sector.  This position will also include 24x7 support on a rotating basis for mission critical applications and escalated problem tickets. 

 

Location

Midtown Atlanta, just across from Colony Square next to the Arts Center with easy access to MARTA Train & Bus Service, and interstate access

 

Education

4-yr College Degree preferably in Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematics

 

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

·         Provide high quality code (and support) for a mission critical application.

·         Use of strong problem solving and analysis skills for debugging purposes.

·         Provide all of the functions required of a developer (including good documentation, thorough testing, change control practices, SDLC use, etc.).

·         Use of good verbal and written communication skills when interacting with end-users, co-workers, managers, etc.

·         Provide a high level of initiative and attention to detail during daily operations.

·         Promote strong teamwork ethic and customer support focus.

 

Skills Required:

·         Minimum of 3+ years in an enterprise information technology environment with much of the last three years spent developing/supporting applications using the following: SQL and C.

·         Minimum of 3+ years developing applications using SQL against large sized relational databases.

·         Minimum of 2+ years of experience in Object Oriented Design and Development (Java, C++, UML).

·         Experience developing applications using SDLC methodology.

·         Experience supporting mission critical applications.

·         Experience in problem-solving and customer training.

·         Proficiency in UNIX.

·         Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

·         Familiarity with testing methodologies, strategies and use of testing tools such as HPQC.

·         Strong teamwork ethic.

·         Excellent customer support and training skills.

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 

Skills Preferred:

·         Development experience using IBM’s DB2 UDB.

·         Development experience using IBM AIX.

·         Experience using MQ Series messaging.

·         Experience in software documentation using UML.

·         Development experience using PERL.

·         Knowledge of UNIFACE.

·         Experience in Enterprise Applications Monitoring.
