ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS + Sets up traffic patterns and signs as directed; breaks up concrete or asphalt using a jackhammer. + Digs down to damaged sewer inlet, basin, manhole or pipe; assists in installing trench protection. + Removes debris and broken sections of sewer; assists with brick and cement repair work on sewers, catch basins and manholes. + Assists in setting up and operating sewer cleaning equipment and drag machines. + Enters manholes to conduct inspection, cleaning or repair of sewers as needed. + Loads and unloads tools and materials needed for repairs, and removes debris from work sites. + Sets up and operates pumps to remove water from sewers and excavations. + Backfills around structures. + Sets forms for and pours and finishes concrete for repairs. + Uses a variety of hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, jack-hammers, concrete saws, soil compaction equipment and star drills. + Perform routine cleaning, maintenance and/or repairs on simple equipment, buildings and premises. + Performs routine cleaning on storm sewer outlets, ditches and culverts; assists with set-up, operation and clean-up of sewer televising equipment. + Assists with set-up, preparation, application and clean-up of pipe patching; assists with set-up, preparation, application and clean-up of grouting processes. + Drives a variety of vehicles with and without trailers as required. + May provide work direction and training to lower-level workers and/or seasonals. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: + Methods, tolls and equipment used in removing sewer line obstructions and repairing sewers + The hazards and safety precautions of the work + Basic math + Safe driving practices Skill in: + Working under varying weather conditions and unpleasant surrounding and in restricted or confined work areas + Using hand tools and operating power equipment and tools + Following directions Ability to: + Work with individuals of diverse backgrounds + Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, superiors, vendor representatives and clients REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS + Ability to read at the eighth (8th) grade level and two (2) years of manual labor work experience which includes the use of hand and pneumatic tools. ADDITIONAL OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS + Must be easily able to lift objects weighing up to approximately ninety (90) pounds. Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without restrictions as to the operation of vehicles with air brakes. (Class A CDL with tanker endorsement preferred) Must be able to enter manholes and become Confined Space Entry certified. CSE certification must be maintained during length of employment. Position assignment may require the ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus and work in confined spaces. PLEASE NOTE: As of February 5, 2025, the Civil Service Commission hastemporarilywaived the requirement to possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) upon hire.
