A Brief Summary of This Position

This is an individual contributor that operates the Mid-Size Trap Shear to cut trapezoids out of steel coil. Programs and operates PLC controlled trapezoid shearing machine and moves traps to stacks in front of the brake press. Monitors the quality of incoming steel and determines when material is substandard. Uses hand banding equipment, tape measures, and micrometers. Performs calibration and setup of both pieces of equipment for changes of coil or thickness.

Essential Functions:

Perform basic programming and setup of PLC controlled machinery, troubleshooting operating malfunctions, and be well versed in operator’s maintenance of the equipmentRead and interpret blue prints, flat sheets, and routings in order to cut parts correctly Complete shop mathematics including conversion of decimals to fractionsOperate overhead cranes from the bridge or shop floor using a remoteUnderstand the properties of steel in order to control the shape of sheets

Demonstrate a commitment to safety through excellent safety practices and behaviorsConform to all Valmont safety policies and proceduresExpected to actively participate in department lean activities and working in a team environmentThis position reports to shop’s Production SupervisorFloor operated bridge crane with suction spreader bar for moving trapsBlastec to shot blast sheets as they convey to the Trap ShearTrap Shear taking sheets and cutting to trapezoidsForklift to empty and/or add shot to Blastec and to remove full dust barrelsGrinder to remove burs from sheets due to poor edge qualityPrecision measuring instruments to check incoming material and to verify that finished product meets specificationsActively participate in department LEAN activities, and demonstrated performance working in a team environmentDemonstrate a commitment to Safety through excellent safety practices and behaviors and conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures

Required Qualifications:

High school diplomaThree (3) to five (5) years of relevant experienceAbility to read and decipher blueprints and flat sheets without assistance and use them to properly shear scheduled workAbility to make mathematical calculations in preparing product or setting up the machineryThe ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds with up to 20 pounds as the most frequent liftThe ability to physically perform the requirements of the tasks assignedMust possess acceptable work history and attendance record

Highly Qualified:

One (1) year of previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environmentAbility to operate overhead cranes from the bridge or shop floor using remoteMinimum one (1) year working with complex PLC controlled, mechanical shearing or similar equipmentKnowledge of basic programming and set-up of PLC controlled machineryThe ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a professional mannerClose attention to detail and follow work instructionsMust be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
