Shift Supervisor

Production Activities

Plans, organizes, and directs employees to run optimum shift operations to meet the Company’s budgetary needs and goals as well as the customer’s demand without compromising safety, quality, and environmental compliance Monitors and manages employees to ensure work flow is maintained by monitoring steps of the process; setting processing variables; observing control points and equipment; coordinating with the Executive Director of Risk Management to facilitate corrections to malfunctions within process control points Completes production plan by scheduling and assigning personnel (including approving time off requests and scheduling coverage for vacation, call ins, and employee emergencies); accomplishing work results; establishing priorities; monitoring progress; and reporting results of the processing flow on shift production summaries and reports Works with Shift Maintenance Supervisor to prioritize maintenance activities based on work priority, equipment, and skill of personnel to ensure a safe, efficient operation Conducts regular safety meetings, which includes preparing materials, coordinating employees, and presenting information via tool box talks and Take 5 discussions

Employee Management

Develops and mentors production employees, which includes: providing resources to increase individual knowledge, conducting regular reviews evaluating performance, working with employees to mitigate opportunities for improvement, and providing cross training opportunities Sets employment expectations through personal and employee accountability, which is identified as: acknowledging, appreciating, and encouraging employees for appropriate behavior and performance; addressing non-compliant behavior and performance  via informal discussions and formal disciplinary action depending on the severity of the employee’s actions as outlined under work rules within the employee handbook; and enforcing company compliance rules to maintain a safe, clean work environment Initiates and fosters a spirit of cooperation with union members by understanding and following the employee handbook as well as the terms of the collective bargaining agreement and resolving personnel problems by analyzing data; investigating issues; identifying solutions; and recommending actions; confers with management team members to resolve employee conflicts or discipline matters as needed

Core Competencies and Skill Requirements:

Strong understanding of factory production Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the production of sugar and bi-products Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo Knowledge of algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their applications Excellent understanding of and commitment to safety Ability to provide guidance and expert advice to employees and other groups based on technical, systems-related or process-related topics in regard to safety Ability to work in a responsible, safe manner by adhering to SMBSC’s safety and housekeeping protocol Strong analytical and critical thinking skills Ability to gather information by observing, receiving and obtaining information from all relevant sources Ability to identify trends, patterns and anomalies with data to draw conclusions and make recommendations for current and future needs Ability to inspect equipment, structures or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems and defects Excellent communication skills Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with internal and external audiences and maintain these relationships over time to advance the overall public image of SMBSC Ability to document information in a logical, sequential manner which includes entering, transcribing, recording, storing and maintaining information Ability to maintain high attention to detail Strong conflict management and resolution skills Ability to handle complaints, settle disputes and conflicts Ability to maintain a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations

Required Education and Experience:

7-10 years of experience in the sugar industry working on the production side with at least three years’ experience as a Crew Leader or Utility Man preferred
