Shift Supervisor

The Linden Generation Station is an 800 MW natural gas/butane gas fired combined cycle co-generation plant located at Railroad and Chemical Avenues within the Phillips 66 refinery. The plant consists of five gas turbine generators exhausting into five triple pressure Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG’s). The HRSG's are connected to a common steam header which supplies steam to three steam turbines and the adjacent refinery.

Opportunity Summary

As a Shift Supervisor, your role involves overseeing plant operators to ensure peak performance, safety, and efficiency. This includes administering lockout/tagout procedures, responding to alarms, and managing shutdown/startup processes. You'll supervise inspections and ensure compliance with safety regulations, including the handling of hazardous materials. Additionally, your responsibilities encompass personnel management, including training, performance appraisal, conflict resolution, and maintaining a secure work environment.

Primary Functions

Your scope of responsibility as Shift Supervisor will include the following primary functions: 

Oversee and direct plant operators to ensure the facility operates at optimal levels in a safe and efficient manner. Administer all plant lockout and tagout procedures to guarantee the safety of personnel and equipment. Respond to alarms by taking necessary corrective actions and executing plant shutdown and startup procedures as required. Supervise the completion of routine inspections and assigned tasks to support the site’s Discharge, Prevention, Containment, and Countermeasures (DPCC) Plan. Ensure that operations staff handle hazardous materials and waste safely and in an environmentally responsible manner. Maintain a safe working environment by enforcing good housekeeping practices in assigned work areas and adhering to all applicable environmental, health, and safety policies. Ensure all required logs and records are accurately maintained in compliance with plant policies and regulations throughout the shift. Oversee and assist with shutdown and startup procedures during outages to minimize downtime. Supervise training programs, implement new policies and procedures, and train staff accordingly. Attend plant management meetings, participate in safety committee activities, and contribute to plant betterment projects. Keep staff informed of updates and changes. Provide constructive feedback on personnel performance to staff and management. Report all plant upset conditions to the Operations Manager. During off-hours, ensure proper management personnel are contacted. Operate all plant equipment and systems within the scope of job responsibilities. Assume responsibility for the entire plant’s operations during off-shift hours. Oversee the Operations Department to ensure customer satisfaction and uphold the plant’s reputation. Train employees by planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems, all while maintaining a safe working environment. Perform other duties as directed, including responding to reasonable requests from the customer’s site management.

Conduct inspections and observations by establishing a regular schedule for work area inspections and implementing a safety observation process for tasks being performed. Establish and lead these activities in compliance with any rules, requirements, or guidance provided by your business unit, group, or division. Engage all NAES teammates in safety-related activities to foster involvement and shared responsibility. Analyze results from inspections and observations, create work orders, and provide training and education to eliminate hazards, mitigate at-risk behaviors, and meet company and regulatory requirements. Conduct regular observation tours, performing no fewer than two safety observation tours of high-risk activities (e.g., confined spaces) to verify that employees are adhering to safe practices, company procedures, and OSHA regulations. Maintain regular and frequent contact with workers by conducting one-on-one sessions to discuss safety issues, communicate expectations, and coach safe behaviors, such as ensuring the use of all required personal protective equipment (PPE). Respond to all safety-related incidents, including injuries, incidents, and near misses. Write detailed reports that explain what occurred, identify the root cause, and recommend corrective actions. Follow up as necessary to ensure corrective actions are implemented and effective, in accordance with established business unit or division practices.

Working Relationships

The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager and takes direction from the Plant Manager depending on assigned duties.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position entails a 12-hour rotating Dupont schedule. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required. Some travel may be involved to participate in Manager, Owner, User Group, or other offsite meetings.

Compensation

Initial compensation will range from $60 to $70 per hour.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the assigned area, typically acquired through four years of high school education. An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable but not required. Possession of a New Jersey Blue Seal Engineer license is a minimum pre-employment requirement, while a New Jersey Gold Seal Engineer license is preferred. Must hold a valid TWIC card or be able to obtain one within a designated timeframe. Extensive experience as a Control Room Operator at a power plant, demonstrating a strong understanding of plant operations and safety protocols. Proven ability to lead and supervise a team, ensuring efficient plant operations and strict adherence to safety procedures. In-depth knowledge of power plant systems, equipment, and processes, enabling effective troubleshooting and informed decision-making. A strong commitment to safety practices, with the ability to enforce safety protocols such as lockout/tagout procedures and the proper handling of hazards. Familiarity with environmental, health, and safety regulations, with a demonstrated track record of ensuring plant compliance. Proficiency in maintaining accurate logs and records in accordance with plant policies and regulatory requirements. Experience in overseeing and assisting with shutdown and startup procedures during plant outages to minimize downtime. Capable of supervising training programs, implementing policies and procedures, and keeping staff informed of updates and changes. Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, fostering collaboration and a harmonious work environment among team members. Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
