Shop Manager

Job Summary: The Shop Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of our equipment maintenance and repair facility, ensuring the efficient and effective maintenance of our fleet of construction equipment and vehicles.  They must set an example by displaying our core values to people both inside and outside of the business.

Equipment Maintenance and Repairs:

Supervise and coordinate maintenance activities for construction equipment and vehicles, including asphalt pavers, rollers, trucks, and support equipment. Schedule and prioritize repair jobs based on equipment availability, project requirements, and operational priorities. Oversee the diagnosis and troubleshooting of equipment issues, ensuring timely and effective repairs to minimize downtime. Establish preventive maintenance programs for all construction equipment and vehicles, scheduling regular inspections, servicing, and repairs to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan. Coordinate maintenance activities with internal mechanics, external service providers, and equipment manufacturers to ensure timely and cost-effective repairs.

Parts and Inventory Management:

Manage inventory levels of spare parts, tools, and supplies necessary for equipment maintenance and repairs. Establish procurement processes for parts and supplies, sourcing vendors, negotiating pricing, and maintaining relationships with suppliers. Monitor parts usage and consumption patterns, identifying opportunities for inventory optimization and cost savings.

Safety and Compliance:

Enforce safety policies and procedures in the shop, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards. Conduct safety inspections of equipment and facilities, addressing safety hazards and deficiencies, and implementing corrective actions as needed. Provide training and guidance to shop personnel on safe work practices, equipment operation, and maintenance procedures.

Team Leadership and Development:

Supervise and mentor shop technicians and mechanics, providing guidance, support, and training to enhance their skills and performance. Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the shop, promoting open communication and collaboration. Conduct performance evaluations, recognize outstanding performance, and address performance issues in a timely and constructive manner.

Facility Management:

Ensure the cleanliness, organization, and functionality of the shop facility, including equipment storage areas, workspaces, and tool storage. Coordinate facility maintenance and repairs, liaising with maintenance staff, contractors, and vendors to address maintenance issues promptly. Implement measures to optimize shop layout, workflow, and productivity, maximizing efficiency and throughput.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required (associate degree or technical certification in a related field preferred). Paving and milling equipment and operations experience is a must. Minimum of 5 years of experience in equipment maintenance and repair, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role. Strong technical knowledge of construction equipment and vehicles, including diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical components. Proficiency in equipment diagnostics and troubleshooting, using diagnostic tools and software to identify and resolve equipment issues. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively manage and motivate a diverse workforce. Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, analyze data, and make informed decisions to optimize shop operations and achieve organizational objectives.
