Welcome to the role of Shop Welder - Fabrication & Machining. In this position, you will utilize various welding techniques to weld and fabricate metal components as specified by blueprints, work orders, and oral instructions.  This is considered a skilled position that requires knowledge of various methods of gas metal welding as well as knowledge of various plates, sheets, and structural shapes in steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized metals. The various types of welding include GMAW, GTAW, SAW, and SMAW. This position has tiered levels based on the complexity of assignments and certifications held.

 

There are three levels of Shop Welders:

Shop Welder I – Entry Level – Not required to be AWS or ASME certified but must become certified within 60 daysShop Welder II – Has obtained at least 3 AWS and/or ASME certificationsShop Welder III – Has obtained a combination of at least 6 AWS and/or ASME certifications in both GMAW and GTAW; a minimum of 2 of those 6 certifications must be in either GMAW or GTAW

 

This individual will have a thorough understanding of all aspects of industrial fabrication and must be proficient with the products and services offered by the company and must be flexible and willing to work extended hours as needed.

What You'll Do Safely and efficiently operate assigned equipmentRead, understand, and accurately execute work orders and quality assurance (QA) standards per job requirementsTack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using welding equipmentPerform structural welding using a variety of procedures, such as the groove weld, fillet weld complete joint penetration, and partial joint penetration.Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positionsPerform quality checks during production to ensure parts/pieces meet tolerance requirementsFollow proper procedures when defective parts are discoveredFacilitate setups and changeovers within welding machine capacitiesIgnite, operate, and cut metal via oxy/acetylene and plasma torches and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arcSecure workpieces and operate stops and guides for proper alignmentOperates overhead and jib cranes to move, lift and place metals and weldments.Exercise proper care, maintenance, and operation of company equipmentMonitor and assist plant operations in accordance with company policies and plant standard operating procedures Perform any general work or other assignments necessary to ensure safe, clean, and efficient shop operations Obtain Competent Operator Certification and safely operate the overhead cranes Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of shop tools and equipmentMaintain a clean and organized work area at all timesAssist with organizing materials and supplies for jobsCommunicate and work effectively with shop personnel, supervisors, and managers to achieve project goals

 

Working Conditions

Sit, talk, hear, read, and writeWalk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and armsStand for extended periods of timeLift and/or move up to 50 poundsPerform duties indoors in a shop setting with occasional work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions What You'll Bring 2+ years of welding and/or fabrication experience in an Industrial Metal Shop preferredMust successfully complete a weld test required prior to employmentAbility to weld in either GMAW or GTAW, both preferredProficient in the use of manual plasma cutter and oxyfuel cutting torchPossess knowledge of metal plate types (steel, aluminum, stainless, galvanized, etc.) sizes, and shapes (beams, channels, angles, pipe, flat bar, etc.) preferredKnowledge of proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies used in an industrial shop settingAbility to use measuring devices such as tape measures, squares, protractors, compasses, micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.Possess a mechanical aptitude with experience in related tasksAbility to read and interpret blueprintsAbility to read and interpret WPS with the ability to adjust machine settings to conform to WPS while maintaining desired arcAbility to follow verbal and written instructionsAbility to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing Must be dependable, trustworthy, possess a positive attitude, and be willing to work independently or in a team environmentMust possess strong math skills including adding, subtracting, decimals, and fractions Ability to effectively multitask Ability to meet strict deadlines and prioritize competing work assignments Experience with the use of an overhead crane preferredValid driver’s license is required How We'll Support You
