Signal Engineer – Transit & Rail | Hybrid | Multiple office locations

VHB is seeking a Signal Engineer to join our dynamic growing team.This position provides an opportunity to work on complex transit and rail infrastructure traction power projects and play an important role in expanding and shaping the group.
In this role you’ll perform detailed phases of signal engineering design work for projects with complex features. You’ll exercise independent judgment and decision making in evaluating, selecting, and applying advanced engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform work and make substantial adaptations and modifications as needed. Support a team in developing signal engineering plans and specifications for a multitude of transit and railroad signaling projects (e.g., train control systems for light and heavy rail transit, and freight, commuter, intercity and high-speed railroad operations).
Responsibilities
Supports the installation, testing, and commissioning of rail based signaling, Communications Based Train Control (CBTC), and Positive Train Control (PTC) projectsPlans, organizes, and oversees signal engineering activities for all phases of a transit and railroad project of significant size and complexity or two or more projects of small to moderate size and complexityDevelops Rail Signal Circuits including but not limited to Interlocking Circuits, Application Logic, Track Diagrams.Participates in all stages of a signaling project from planning and design to installation and commissioningMakes recommendations on project staffingDevelops detailed signal designs and systems, including at grade railroad crossing systems for both constant and fixed warning systems and traffic preemption functionsDevelops and modifies electrical circuitsPerforms feasibility studies and analysis, including braking calculations, control tables, routes and aspects, schematics, and phasing plansSupports key stages of the installation, testing and commissioning of rail based signaling, Communications Based Train Control (CBTC), and Positive Train Control (PTC) projectsSkills and Attributes
Familiarity with track, station, layover facility and general civil engineeringStrong capability in use of computer applications including AutoCAD, Microstation, MS Word, Excel, PowerPointCapability in the use of project management applications such as MS Project or PrimaveraTeam oriented with strong capability to work independentlyRobust technical and critical thinking skillsQualifications
BS in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related field of study preferred5-8 years of experience in rail transit design and/or signal engineering design required 8+ preferredClear understanding of railroad and rail transit design requirements including AREMA recommended practicesWillingness to travel on occasionEngineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or PE licensure preferredOur best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York City is $100,000-130,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
The base salary range for this position is $90,000 - 120,000 for the Washington, DC location. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
