SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educator - East Meadow, NY
This Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (SNAP-Ed) Nutrition Educator will primarily be responsible for the delivery of established SNAP-Ed public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among families and individuals encompassing all age groups throughout the Long Island SNAP-Ed Region and Nassau County. This position will be based in the CCE Nassau County office. Traveling between Nassau County partnered locations and Suffolk County partnered locations on a daily basis will be required. This position will also include assisting with marketing efforts for SNAP-Ed programming in collaboration with other Nutrition Educators in the SNAP-Ed region.

This is a 1.0 FTE grant-funded position. Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program is through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).

    

Required Qualifications:

Associate’s Degree in the field of Nutrition, Health Education or Public Health or equivalent education (GED/High School Diploma and one (1) year transferrable program/functional experience).Experience relevant to the role of the position.Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.Ability to flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in Spanish and/or Haitian-Creole.Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences and work with diverse audiences of all ages.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Basic computer and word processing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.Familiarity with purchasing and preparing foods.Familiarity with reviewing and following recipes and assure compliance to federal and state guidelines.Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research - 80%

Deliver high quality programming to individuals and groups utilizing approved SNAP-Ed curricula and existing SNAP-Ed program materials and resources.Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, adapt lesson plans and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.Assist with implementing environmental program initiatives, such as community and school gardens.Assist in multi-association team efforts to deliver the SNAP-Ed Program.Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.Implement lesson plans in region with multicultural needs using current and approved curricula and supplemental materials, and tailor appropriate programming based in identified participant needs as applicable.Interact with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialist and faculty, county and community leaders to assist in obtaining evaluation data for programs.Assist in communication of evaluation results and findings.Make recommendations for improvement/changes to strengthen and improve programmatic offerings.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Coordination/Operation - 15%

Utilize existing program materials to recruit the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the SNAP-Ed Program.Organize and coordinate SNAP-Ed program activities (i.e. food demonstrations, direct lessons to adults and youth, etc.) to support delivery of established program goals.Submit accurate program related expense receipts and mileage reports in a timely manner.Assist Supervisor in identified administrative aspects of the SNAP-Ed Program including, but not limited to: preparing correspondence, maintaining files, maintaining participant records, etc. ensuring confidentiality of all information.Transport program materials and resources necessary for performing position responsibilities.Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.Assist in providing marketing materials in the promotion of the SNAP-Ed programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other Nutrition Educators.Complete reports, as requested.Accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.Assist in providing existing information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, etc.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION DETAILS:

Two positions available. These positions are full-time, non-exempt positions, 40 hours per week. The hourly rate for these positions is $25.00. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation and sick leave.
