Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an experienced, visionary leader to guide our social media strategy and chart a path through an ever-changing digital landscape. This person will be instrumental in driving innovation around digital storytelling and solidifying The Post’s social accounts as the ultimate destination for discovering and engaging in the most important stories of the day.

This is a key leadership position that will have strategic oversight of The Washington Post’s presence, voice and strategy across social platforms. Top candidates will be a brand- and voice-building expert and possess a record of driving audience and platform growth. They should have wide knowledge of existing, emerging and new social platforms and be strategic and opportunistic in helping The Post spot them, adapt and redeploy resources as needed. They should be passionate about serving audiences and be driven by data and results.

We want a strategic thinker and motivated problem solver who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. This person should have a deep understanding of journalistic storytelling standards, social metrics and an ability to connect them back to business impact.

Responsibilities:

Own the development and execution of The Post’s social media strategy.

Oversee our core social teams that manage our Instagram, X, Facebook, Reddit, Snapchat, WhatsApp and other branded accounts.

Work directly with leaders on the Video, Opinions, Events, Marketing and Brand teams to shape how The Washington Post presents itself and engages across all social platforms.

Define The Post’s social media goals and metrics to track the performance of social channels.

Deliver performance insights and strategic guidance to senior leadership and continuously optimize the strategy and creative elements to ensure effectiveness.

Shape the vision and processes for building social-first and social-exclusive storytelling across platforms.

Identify and foster creative talent and formats that resonate deeply with social audiences.

Own communications with platform representatives and foster relationships with platforms.

Please consider applying if you meet most of these requirements:

 

At least 5 years of management experience in social media or audience development.

At least 10 years of experience in social media or audience development, preferably at a media organization.

A passion for keeping up with social media, marketing and engagement best practices and industry changes. 

Strong analytical skills and the ability to leverage data to construct compelling narratives to influence decision making.

Experience directing the strategy for social media accounts, particularly Instagram, X, Facebook, Reddit, Snapchat, WhatsApp and/or TikTok.

Experience managing social partner relationships.

Experience building partnerships with brands and influencers for platform collaborations.

A collaborative mindset and demonstrated ability to work with stakeholders, including with newsroom, analytics, brand and marketing, and product teams.

Expertise in using analytics to make real-time and long-term strategic decisions. 

Exceptional organizational abilities and strong communication skills.

The salary range for this position is: $122,500.00 — $204,100.00. The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
