Location:
New York, NYThe New Yorker is seeking a social-media manager to promote the magazine’s journalism across social-media platforms. The person in this role must possess excellent writing and editing skills, an ability to manage their work independently, and familiarity with and interest in the stories and issues regularly covered by The New Yorker. In addition to writing posts and creating design assets for social channels, the person in this role will crop photographs for Web articles, pitch and execute creative storytelling approaches, and manage other duties as assigned by the director of social media.
The social-media manager will regularly cover weekends as well as some early mornings, late nights, and other assigned shifts. This is a Guild position.
Responsibilities:
Writing, editing, scheduling, and publishing social-media posts to share The New Yorker’s stories across platforms
Identifying news pegs and opportunities to repromote archival stories, cartoons, and covers
Writing and sending push notifications
Pulling photographs for breaking-news stories
Cropping photographs for a selection of Web articles
Managing The New Yorker’s social-media channels independently over the weekends, communicating early and often with editors, the copy team, and fact checkers
Contributing to community management on all social platforms
Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager
Skills and Qualifications:
Experience writing and editing for a newsroom
Excellent critical reading skills and demonstrated ability to accurately, creatively, and effectively translate The New Yorker’s journalism into short-form copy
An understanding of the media landscape and a strong news sense
Knowledge of, passion for, and experience with social-media platforms
Ability to manage multiple projects at once and work in a fast-paced, always changing environment
Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational and communication skills
Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner
Some design and/or photography experience
The expected base salary range for this position is from $77,000-$82,500. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
