This is a fulltime classified position. The Social Service Counselor (Peer Specialist) will work within the Advocacy Division, and will attribute its skills to obtain resources for those persons served with behavioral health disabilities. The Social Service Counselor (Peer Specialist) is vital to client services and its duties and responsibilities are directly related to the program and its outcomes are vital to the success of the program. They provide persons served with care coordination, including appropriate referrals for community-based resources that are within the service parameters. The incumbent for this position will need good interpersonal skills, because they will be interacting with persons served daily. The incumbent will also need extremely good research and analysis skills to determine what resources are referrals are needed for persons served with addiction disorders. The incumbent will also need to possess strong communication and customer service skills. Persons served shall be treated with respect and dignity, and shall not be treated any differently because of their disabilities. SUBSTITUTIONS: Six years of full-time work experience in any field may be substituted for the required baccalaureate degree. Candidates without a baccalaureate degree may combine work experience and college credit to substitute for the baccalaureate degree as follows: A maximum of 120 semester hours may be combined with experience to substitute for the baccalaureate degree. 30 to 59 semester hours credit will substitute for one year of experience towards the baccalaureate degree. 60 to 89 semester hours credit will substitute for two years of experience towards the baccalaureate degree. 90 to 119 semester hours credit will substitute for three years of experience towards the baccalaureate degree. 120 or more semester hours credit will substitute for four years of experience towards the baccalaureate degree. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Positions that provide addictive disorder counseling services require certification or eligibility for certification as a Counselor in Training (CIT), or a current practice credential as a Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC), Registered Addiction Counselor (RAC), or Licensed Addictive Counselor (LAC) issued by the Addictive Disorder Regulatory Authority (ADRA), or its successor, pursuant to the Addictive Disorders Practice Act, LA RS. 37.3386-3390.6 Positions that provide addictive disorder prevention services require certification or eligibility for certification as a Prevention Specialist in Training (PSIT), or a current practice credential as a Certified Prevention Professional (CPP), Registered Prevention Professional (RPP), Licensed Prevention Professional (LPP) issued by the Addictive Disorder Regulatory Authority (ADRA), or its successor, pursuant to the Addictive Disorders Practice Act, LA RS. 37.3386-3390.6 NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university. Examples of Work Duties & Responsibilities: Peer Support and Care Coordination + Maintains the responsiveness of behavioral health services by identifying the needs of the persons served within the community as well as those PSS serving within clinics and grants, evaluating the quality of behavioral health services, addressing issues and concerns, resolving problem, and developing plans and objectives. + Convenes and conducts meetings with agency departments, community officials, and the public to ensure the high levels of resource service delivery are maintained. Also plans monthly PSS All Staff meeting and coordinates team building activities. + Identifies, defines, and provides input on issues, needs, and problems relation to behavioral health, and proposes solutions to the program manager and members of consumer and family groups as well as PSS. + Serves as a point of contact for persons served and their advocates who are experiencing difficulties with behavioral health and facilitates solutions to resolve such difficulties. + Serves as point of contact for PSS submitting Care Coordination applications on the behalf of persons served as well as serving as the first line of communication for any issues with PSS or recovery support services. + I dentifies the various resources needed by the addiction services unit, persons served, the community, and ensures that those resources are provided in a timely manner in order to provide top notch services for persons served who rely on quick services for a speedy recovery. + Identifies the appropriate referrals for community-based resources that are within the service parameters. Researches the proper facilities and other programs that the persons served may need and provides those referrals. + Interacting with the persons served to find out what their needs are. Addresses those needs by determining what resources what best serve the person served. Make sure they are providing persons served with the proper care coordination. + Consulting with the addiction services team to ensure that the proper resources are being distributed and uses suggestions to better serve the persons served. + Oversees day-to-day operations of PSS to ensure that proper documentation is occurring and that PSS services are being delivered in a manner that is consistent with policies and procedures. + Listens to management about performance and the suggestions and direction given to ensure that resources and referrals are being allocation properly and in the best interest of the persons served. + Assists the Advocacy Director/Manager with recruiting and hiring new PSS. 20% Manages a caseload of persons served within behavioral health services + Schedules appointments with persons served to determine what their needs are, evaluation progress in counseling sessions, and making recommendations to the treatment team. + Provides client assessments to better learn the persons served, which will assist in providing the correct resources and referrals needed. + Follows up with the caseload of persons served to make sure that the resources and / or referrals providing are correct and are working in their best interests. + Creates reports and tracks what resources are being used, and where the persons served are being referred. + Serves as a liaison between client, family and agency. May also need to interview family members to get a better background of the needs of persons served.
