Social Services Assistant
Summary The incumbent serves as the Social Services Assistant for VA Central Iowa Health Care System's (VACI HS) Homeless Programs and is located at the Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC). The Social Services Assistant supports the Homeless Programs by assisting with the day-to-day operations of the CRRC and providing support to professional staff in providing services to Veterans. Responsibilities Administrative Work (60%): Managing the fleet of Government vehicles assigned to the CRRC by completing vehicle checks as required by the VACI HS motor pool and accrediting bodies; coordinating scheduling of maintenance and repairs with the motor pool which may include taking the vehicle to be serviced, submitting vehicle logs, receipts, etc. per policy, and coordinating of other tasks that may be necessary. Completing an inventory when items are donated, organizing donated items and submitting donation forms to Voluntary Services per protocol. Providing coverage of the CRRC front desk, waiting area, and shower/laundry area. Assisting with monitoring of the CRRC Multipurpose Room as needed. Assisting with mass mailings as needed. Organizing and monitoring Veteran mail that is received at the CRRC. Ordering supplies and other items as needed (i.e. office supplies, linens, etc.) which may require going to the main campus to pick up. Assisting with data collection as needed. Gathering resource information from a variety of resources and sharing with the Homeless Programs team. This could include identifying housing in the community, including housing that accepts Section 8, and maintaining an inventory database of safe, available units. Participating in the Homeless Veteran Stand Down, Point-in-Time Count, and other community-based events as appropriate. Other administrative tasks necessary to maintain the day-to-day operation of the CRRC and Homeless Programs. Examples of tasks may include, but are not limited to, serving as a timekeeper, purchase card holder, ordering equipment, etc. Direct Work with Veterans (40%): Assisting Veterans with basic computer skills. Assisting Veterans with obtaining and completing necessary documentation and tasks in relation to meeting housing and employment goals. Assisting Veterans with housing searches, completing housing applications, etc. Assisting Veterans with building resumes, completing job applications, etc. Providing Veteran transportation to appointments, on housing searches, job interviews, etc. Assisting Veteran with move into housing which includes but is not limited to obtaining necessities and furniture, scheduling furniture move-in, and turning on utilities which may be done through collaboration with Voluntary Services and community providers. Informing treatment team of interests or concerns of the Veteran. Providing information about VA and community resources . Issuing donated items to Veterans as indicated following CRRC protocols. Documenting contacts and services or assistance provided in in the medical record. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level of GS-07 without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. The incumbent must possess a current driver's license with a chauffeur's endorsement and drive a government vehicle in carrying out professional duties. All drivers must meet the minimum VA and VHA medical requirements for the operation of vehicles. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/19/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in community and office settings. The primary office location is at the Community Resource and Referral Center but may work at multiple sites within VA Central Iowa. Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled area, except when performing duties out in the community since the environment cannot be as easily controlled.
