Integrated Social Work (ISW) provides virtual and in-person social support services at IU Health primary care and select specialty clinics. Social Workers communicate and collaborate effectively to ensure that patient care is delivered safely and promptly and that patients and their families receive all necessary resources and education. They interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs and model caring practices for other caregivers.
Social Workers assess patients' and families' psychosocial risk factors by evaluating prior functioning levels, the appropriateness and adequacy of support systems, reactions to illness, and coping abilities. They counsel patients and families regarding the emotional, social, and financial circumstances of illness and/or disability, and access and mobilize family and community resources to meet identified needs.
Furthermore, Social Workers serve as knowledge experts and advocates in cases of child abuse/neglect, adult/elderly abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence. They utilize effective interviewing principles when working with alleged victims, perpetrators, family members, and significant others. They are responsible for reporting incidents of adult and child abuse/neglect from Indiana University Health to State and County Child and Adult Protective Hotlines and Law Enforcement. Additionally, they provide intervention in guardianship (temporary/permanent), foster care, adoption, and support for individuals undergoing acute crises by employing de-escalation techniques to prevent episodes of physical violence and providing clinical intervention as needed.
