Amazon.com
Amazon S3 powers businesses across the globe that make the lives of consumers better daily. Whether its electronic content delivered to your home, technology that betters your remote working experience, allows you to plan travel to exotic places or simply get stuff delivered to your home. As a Software Development Engineer in S3, you get to deliver these capabilities and delight our customers through teams of talented engineers and leaders.
We are seeking experienced and driven Software Development Engineers to join the S3 API Webserver team, the core request processing engine that powers the S3 service relied upon by millions of users worldwide. As an SDE on our team, you will design, build, and optimize the software that enables the S3 API to run efficiently and reliably at scale. You will tackle complex challenges in distributed systems, high durability, high availability, performance optimization, and scalability, all while working on a service critical to millions of customers every day. Engineers on this team must have a deep knowledge of computer science, a solid foundation in secure engineering practices, and a genuine desire to mentor and lead their more junior teammates. This role offers the opportunity to innovate at scale, solve deep technical problems, and make a tangible impact on one of the most widely used storage services in the world. If you’re passionate about large-scale systems, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and want to shape the future of cloud storage, we’d love to hear from you.
This role will sit in our new headquarters in Northern Virginia, where Amazon will invest $2.5 billion dollars, occupy 4 million square feet of energy efficient office space, and create at least 25,000 new full-time jobs. Our employees and the neighboring community will also benefit from the associated investments from the Commonwealth including infrastructure updates, public transportation improvements, and new access to Reagan National Airport.

A day in the life
A typical day for an SDE on the S3 API Webserver team involves a blend of designing, coding, and operational support. You might spend your time designing and implementing new features, writing and reviewing code, or troubleshooting and resolving issues affecting customers. A significant portion of your day may also be spent improving tools to support deployments and operations at S3’s scale or optimizing performance to ensure smooth operations across hundreds of thousands of hosts. Performance tuning, enhancing reliability, and supporting feature rollouts are key development tasks. Operational investigations, root cause analysis, and documenting solutions are integral to maintaining and improving the service’s stability and efficiency while driving innovation in a complex distributed system.
About the team
We have a diverse team and drive towards an inclusive culture and work environment. Our team is intentional about attracting, developing, and retaining amazing talent from any and all backgrounds.
