Education & Experience Required + Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other related field + Four or more years of programming experience Or an equivalent combination of education and experience Education & Experience Preferred + Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other related field Principal Duties & Responsibilities + Design and Development + Lead the design, development, testing, and optimization of customer-facing applications, leveraging Java features such as equals, hashcode, Comparable, compareTo, and Optional. Utilize advanced language constructs like lambdas, streams, boxing/unboxing, and implement secure and thread-safe usage of instance variables. + Data Structures and Performance + Work extensively with data structures such as Lists, Maps, Sets, Arrays, and Trees, understanding their performance characteristics to select the appropriate structure for specific use cases. Analyze and optimize performance while avoiding common pitfalls, such as unnecessary overhead or misuse of data structures. + Defensive Coding and Exception Handling + Apply defensive coding strategies, including null-checking, exception handling (e.g., try-catch-finally, try-with-resources), and addressing edge cases like empty streams or lists. Incorporate throttling, retries, and robust exception hierarchies to ensure reliability and effective error recovery. + Code Optimization and Memory Management + Utilize tools like JProfiler (or YourKit) to analyze and resolve memory leaks and optimize heap usage. Efficiently handle paginated collections and apply best practices, such as isEmpty() vs. size() > 0, to improve code performance and maintainability. + Database, SQL, and API Integration + Design and implement database interactions using SQL with JDBC, leveraging PreparedStatements for secure queries. Analyze explain plans, manage transactions, and integrate RESTful APIs using JSON and Swagger. Work with JdbcTemplate, RestTemplate, and NamedJdbcTemplate to streamline database and API operations. + Spring and Spring Boot Expertise + Build scalable applications using Spring and Spring Boot, employing dependency injection, @RestController, and Java-based configuration. Use Spring Actuator, Spring Cloud Stream, or reactive programming to enhance system capabilities. Develop and execute unit tests (e.g., JUnit) and use Maven for compiling, testing, and running applications. + AWS and Cloud Technologies + Utilize AWS services such as EC2, S3, ECS/EKS, and RDS to build and manage cloud-based solutions. Leverage Kubernetes for container orchestration and configure autoscaling groups for high availability. Work with the AWS Console for resource management and SSH for secure access to EC2 instances. + Collaboration and Delivery + Participate in Scrum processes to ensure efficient software delivery, collaborating with stakeholders to define requirements and solutions for moderate to complex systems. Perform code reviews and enforce standards for resilience, data integrity, and security. + Testing and Implementation + Test and implement application modules while adhering to coding standards and defensive coding practices. Conduct performance tuning and ensure the software aligns with client and business needs. + Additional Duties + Provide design recommendations, occasionally writing complex design specifications, and make necessary modifications to existing applications or modules. Perform other responsibilities as required to meet organizational goals. + Demonstrated experience with release automation tools and practices for CI/CD pipelines to include experience with version control systems like Git. + Preferred UX/UI dev with single page web app JavaScript libraries and frameworks like React, Angular, etc. Total Rewards This compensation range is specific to the job level and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. The range has been created in good faith based on information known to Aflac at the time of the posting. Compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case. This salary range does not include any potential incentive pay or benefits, however, such information will be provided separately when appropriate. The salary range for this position is $59,000 - $145,000.
