We seek a Senior Mainframe Architect to design secure and scalable mainframe architectures aligned with our enterprise strategy. This role involves collaboration with business stakeholders, development teams, security professionals, and governance boards to ensure our mainframe environment remains resilient, secure, and integrated with modern IT ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities:

Design secure mainframe architectures aligned with enterprise strategy.

Foster partnerships with business stakeholders to understand requirements.

Lead cross-functional initiatives between infrastructure, development, and security teams.

Mentor junior architects and engineers.

Facilitate technology governance board discussions.

Build consensus among competing priorities and diverse stakeholders.

Influence enterprise architecture decisions through clear communication.

Performs proofs of concept / prototypes and recommends the application of such technologies for future technology architecture.

Present complex technical solutions to executive leadership.

Required Skills: Technical:

10+ years of mainframe expertise in z/OS, RACF, and security frameworks.

Strong experience with enterprise security (RACF, ACF2, Top Secret), compliance, and risk assessment frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001, SOX, PCI-DSS, HIPAA).

Deep knowledge of mainframe modernization, API enablement, and integration patterns (e.g., IBM z/OS Connect, MQ, CICS web services).

Experience with hybrid cloud integration and DevSecOps practices for mainframes (e.g., Zowe, Ansible, Git-based SCM, automation tools).

Performance tuning and capacity planning expertise in large-scale mainframe environments.

Strong knowledge in IBM Mainframe hardware, disk, and tape storage systems

Disaster recovery (GDPS, Sysplex) and high-availability design principles.

Leadership & Interpersonal:

Proven experience managing matrix relationships across business and IT teams.

Executive-level communication and presentation skills for influencing senior leadership.

Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills to align diverse stakeholders.

Experience leading enterprise-wide initiatives, particularly in mainframe-to-cloud modernization efforts.

Change management and organizational influence

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in a relevant field (Computer Science, Information Security, Enterprise Architecture).

Security certifications (CISSP, CISM, CRISC).

Experience in regulated industries (banking).

Program/portfolio management experience, particularly in technology transformation initiatives.

Salary:

$113,900.00 - $211,800.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
