RIVERWAY CLINIC JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Sonographer 

DEPARTMENT: Radiology

REPORTS TO: Primary Care Nursing Supervisor

DIRECTION OF OTHERS: None

POSITION PURPOSE:

Performs all duties necessary in providing high quality ultrasound exams. Ensure high quality patient care while working cooperatively with physicians and co-workers. Excellence is to be centered on patient care and patient relationships and is the responsibility of all employees.

Health: Data and Quality

Confirms patient information (proper patient identification and correct exam ordered on patient) on control sheet/exam request.

Selects proper technical factors and operates equipment in a safe, effective manner, ensuring established protocol for quality control.

Documents and processes reports, organizes VCR tapes/films, reviews finished exams for completeness, assists Sonologist/Radiologist with viewing and report exams.

Keeps accurate records and statistics of all exams for Quality Control and patient outcomes.

Ensures an organized, safe and professional environment.

Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy. Uses independent judgment of exam comprehensives.

Is informed and knowledgeable regarding new technology. Implements new technology in department.

Follows strict OSHA standards.

Contacts patients and referring providers, as needed, e.g. results, follow-up, etc.

Demonstrates clinical competence in using correct processes to provide care to patients and their families.

Implements established RiverWay policies and procedures.

Documents patient information accurately and completely and keeps records regarding clinical practice.

Makes appropriate referrals.

Uses interdisciplinary resources to enhance own decision-making.

Uses appropriate systems, automated or manual, to obtain patient information and schedule appointments.

Engages in ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of teaching in terms of understanding and application.

Participates in patient care conferences, in-services and educational programs at RiverWay, HealthPartners, hospital and community.

Develops new opportunities, tools, and methods of teaching.

Maintains ARDMS Registration by completing required continuing education.

Delegates appropriately and remains accountable for safe delivery of that delegated care.

Assists with the updating of current, and development of new procedures as appropriate.

Serves as a catalyst for improving standards of practice.

Participates in and utilizes research appropriate to clinical setting to improve patient care.

Answers incoming calls and respond appropriately. Greets patients warmly.

Recognizes and responds to written, verbal and nonverbal communications in an appropriate and timely manner.

Greets patients with a warm welcome and completes interactions with a warm closure.

Patient Advocacy: Assures patient’s rights to privacy, safety and confidentiality.

Respects, embraces and values diversity.

Provides support to patients and their families.

Serves as a role model in the enhancements of practice and professional conduct.

Demonstrates positive verbal communication and listening skills with internal and external customers.

Remains accountable for the efficient use of time, material and human resources.

Maintains a well-stocked and esthetic exam room to ensure and organized, safe and professional environment.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Reads department and RiverWay and HealthPartners e-mail daily to keep up with changed. Has read department requirements, e.g., policy manual review, OSHA, etc. annually, as required.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. Must possess speech, hearing and sight skills to perform the functions of the position. Manual dexterity required. Must be able to speak, read and write English proficiently. Some lifting may be required. May need to travel from one clinic to another.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS: which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work:

Telephones, computers, ultrasound equipment, quality control devices and other equipment related to clinic ultrasound/radiology setting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

Required

Credentialing by one of the following Credentialing bodies: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT), or Registry eligible graduate of a CAAHEP accredited ultrasound program to attain appropriate credentialing of specialty within one year from graduation.

Must be credentialed in Abdomen (RDMS or RT(S)) and Vascular (RVT or RVS)

Preferred:

Experience in specific ultrasound area, e.g. OB/GYN, echocardiography, General Ultrasound and knowledge of relative anatomy.
