Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m
Scope of Position: Assist in organizing deliveries and donations, preparing and serving meals, and cleaning the Meriden Corps’ Soup Kitchen, adhering to the rules and regulations of the State Health Department. Responsibilities Adhere to guidelines for staff responsibilities as found in The Salvation Army’s Employee Manuals.Attend workshops, meetings, and training as necessary to be informed of regulations and changes for soup kitchens.Ensure that all food is handled and stored according to the rules and regulations of the Health Department.Ensure that the kitchen program complies with the Health Department.Keep kitchen equipment and storage areas thoroughly clean and stocked in accordance with the Health Department's rules and regulations.Maintain accurate records (daily temp checks, in-kind donations, daily menu changes, etc.).Assist with clean-up, ensuring proper washing and putting away all items (pots, pans, utensils, slicer, etc.) used to prepare the meals.Assist with the preparation and meal service for the Meriden Soup Kitchen as scheduled according to the menu. Notify the supervisor of items that need to be purchased for the Soup Kitchen.Perform necessary errands to acquire food and other soup kitchen items as required.Prepare and serve meals in the event of a volunteer group cancellation, if available.Promptly notify the Corps Officer(s) when volunteers raise concerns about the kitchen.Secure the building upon the conclusion of each meal (e.g., lock office doors, shut off lights, secure the alarm).Store all foods neatly upon delivery in the kitchen or storerooms in accordance with food storage guidelines. Wipe down counters and tables, sweep and mop floors, clean and stock bathrooms, remove trash from the building, and dispose of expired foods.Work holidays when scheduled and available. Qualifications A high school diploma or equivalent is required.Two years of cooking experience and meal service preferred; cooking ability is required.QFO (qualified food operator)/ServeSafe certification required or willing to obtain upon hiring.Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work environment.Able to read and follow standardized recipes and instructions.Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and under pressure.Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel, service providers, volunteers, etc.Must be able to adhere to the work schedule and work an occasional evening, weekend, or holiday.Must be empathetic and caring.Must complete KeepSAfe and other training requirements upon hire.Organized, able to multitask, and strong communication skills.Strong knowledge of proper food handling preferred.Valid driver’s license and clean driving record preferred.Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army.
