Space Communications Systems Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking systems engineers to support pre-mission planning, analysis, and support for communications networks and data processing systems utilized for human spaceflight and other select missions. This role involves performing systems requirements measurement and validation, as well as analyzing system capabilities to ensure that NASA systems meet mission parameters. You will also validate and implement solutions to assure successful support of various crewed and robotic missions operated by NASA, International Partners, and commercial entities fulfilling objectives in low-earth and lunar orbits.

ResponsibilitiesProvide support in the acquisition, maintenance, and protection of resources to ensure that space communications systems can operate to their fullest capacity.Author, review, and extract critical information from Requirements Documents, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Test Plans, Verification Matrices, Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and other technical documentation.Participate in Systems Requirements Reviews, Preliminary & Critical Design Reviews, Technical Interchange Meetings, and peer reviews.Author and refine operations processes through rigorous peer and external reviews.Perform anomaly analysis and implement corrective actions where needed.Support NASA human spaceflight objectives at national and international working group meetings and reviews.Resolve usage problems and promote the efficient use of NASA resources.Participate in national and international groups to promote human spaceflight customers' interests.Serve as a member and advisor in various working groups and advisory panels of national and international significance to assure mission success.Coordinate across NASA centers, organizations, and internal group elements.Essential SkillsExperience with spaceflight communications systems, NASA networks, NASA ground systems, and related hardware and systems.Support the analysis of network engineering and network communications systems plans, and compare network requirements and demands against the limitations and capabilities of the NASA networks to be utilized.Track and support the launch process, mission operations, and ground systems teams with communications systems support as needed.Support systems engineering mission requirements tracking, traceability, flowdowns, validation, and other systems engineering related tasks necessary for the missions being supported.Perform all systems engineering tasks according to NASA Systems Engineering Handbook processes.Using MATLAB, python, and excel spreadsheets for analysis QualificationsBachelor’s or Master’s of Science from an accredited institution in engineering, math, physics or related.Possess knowledge of concepts in a segment of Satellite Communications, such as Space to Ground, baseband processing, or other specialty.Ability to formulate and perform systems analysis using Matlab, STK, Excel, etc.Ability to perform fault isolation and recovery to reported anomalies, independently developing solutions and then presenting a comprehensive review Previous exp required with high reliability systems engineering, following the NASA systems engineering handbook, requirements tracking, validation, traceability and management.Experience writing and maintaining requirement documentation.

Additional desired experience:

Satellite mission operations, spacecraft systems, ground systems, mission control center interfaces, mission planning, mission operations, mission certification, requirements validation, human spaceflight missions and networks, space data relays, Network Operations Readiness Reviews (NORR), NASCOM (NASA Ground Communications Systems) and other related systems.Prior flight operations/ systems engineering experience on a NASA mission is preferred but other experience can be applicable. Direct experience working with NASA comms Networks, such as the Space Network (SN), Near Earth Network (NEN), or Deep Space Network (DSN)The ability to review and validate Radio Frequency interference & compatibility analysis, Power Flux Density analysis or Spectral analysis for Space based comms systems. Verify performance of Radio Frequency (RF) communication links/ creating link budgets.Knowledge of communication systems such as digital modulation, spread spectrum signals, signal detection, forward error correction, interference analysis, baseband filtering, data formatting/ packaging, CCSDS standards.
