Space Payload Software Engineering Manager

If so, we are looking for you, our next Space Payload Software Engineering Manager to work in San Diego, CA, as the hands-on manager of a small team to design and develop, integrate, and test embedded software.  From our Space Sensors Engineering Design office in San Diego, California, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective InfraRed (IR) Payloads that are hosted on satellites in earth orbit to support the Space Development Agency’s National Defense Space Architecture.  You will have an opportunity to experience, learn, and lead a team through all phases of the product life cycle from concept development and detailed design through integration, testing, and post-delivery support. You will be hands-on in the implementation and testing of embedded software and hardware, and firmware, on a variety of platforms including FPGAs, microcontrollers, microprocessors, GPUs, and mixed signal designs.  The ideal candidate must be a self-starter with software engineering management or leadership experience in embedded systems for hard, real-time applications.

Primary Responsibilities

We are seeking skilled and experienced Software Engineering Manager to join our dynamic and innovative software development team. As our software engineering manager, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the capability, quality, and reliability of our software and hardware products. You will work closely with our systems engineering and quality assurance teams to architect, design, and implement spacecraft flight software and firmware in a highly automated DevSecOps CI/CD environment. Basic Qualifications

- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering from an ABET-accredited university and 12+ years’ experience or Master’s Degree with 10+ years of experience. May possess a Ph.D. with 8+ years of experience.

- At least three (3) years of experience serving as a software engineering manager for an embedded software development team, or five (5) years of combined technical lead and management experience.

- Experience coordinating software efforts across multiple programs including embedded flight software, ground support software, test equipment software, and software and hardware in the loop simulators.

- Prior experience supporting proposals by generating technical solutions and estimates of labor and material.

- Prior experience managing and/or leading development of embedded software and firmware for satellites, satellite payload, aircraft, or aircraft sensor suite programs.

- Prior hands-on development experience to integrate hardware and software, including electronic control modules, FPGA processing boards, power systems, DSP/ARM/PowerPC boards, PCI & VPX busses, stepper motor controllers, health and status circuits, electro-mechanical devices, and spacecraft or aircraft data interfaces.

- Experience in all phases of software development from detailed requirements flow down, trade studies, processing architecture design, hardware selection, firmware and software development, integration and test, system I&T, and operational support.

- Strong analytical background including the use of Matlab to model complex algorithms.

- Experience mapping complex image processing algorithms into a processing architecture which includes FPGAs, GPUs, CPUs, and custom electronics.

- Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools like Jenkins Agents or GitLab Runners.

- Familiarity with security testing tools and practices to identify vulnerabilities in software and static code analysis

- Proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, C and C++ with the ability to write, maintain, and troubleshoot code.

- Proficient in using version control systems (e.g., GitLab, SVN) to manage source code in a defined branching structure.

- Working knowledge of Agile Principles and the Scrum framework.

- Understanding of software quality assurance best practices and the ability to contribute to the improvement of software processes.

- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with cross-functional teams and report on progress and results.

- U.S Citizen and must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD SECRET clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with embedded C and hard real-time operating systems; Green Hills Integrity specifically is a bonus.

- Knowledge of performance testing tools and methodologies to assess the performance and scalability of software applications.

- Understanding of containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes.

- Ability to model system performance using MATLAB or similar toolset.

- Experience with image processing algorithms, Kalman filtering, and/or closed-loop control systems.

- Proficiency in lab tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.

- Proficiency in test automation using industry-standard tools and frameworks such as Python, Java, Jython, Xray for Jira or similar technologies.

- Experience conducting design trades of complexity and performance across the system architecture, hardware implementation, algorithm implementation, firmware architecture, and the software architecture.

- Experience implementing interfaces such as 1GE Ethernet, 40G QSFP+, LVDS, and serial busses.

- Experience with adaptive signal processing.

- Have or are willing to obtain a Top Secret clearance.

Pay Range:Pay Range $122,200.00 - $220,900.00
