Special Investigation PREA Unit - Summer College Intern
Job Description The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. SIU PREA handles highly sensitive investigations of sexual assault and harassment involving both our persons in custody and staff involvement in a correctional setting. The selected candidate should demonstrate the ability to properly and accurately document in-person interviews, transcribe telephone conversations utilizing phone monitoring systems and in chronological form build timeline of events under the supervision of a trained investigator and communicate with direct and active listening skills. Additional duties may include assisting in administrative duties maintaining physical case files in dedicated filing system and records management including electronic files via scanned copies and assist in preparation of standardized data collection for analytical reports. PREFFERED SKILLS -Possess great communication and interpersonal skills and detail-oriented; Computer Literate, knowledge of excel, word applications, data-entry, possess basic Microsoft Outlook knowledge. Learning objectives include an Interest of study in law a plus (i.e. criminal justice), statistical studies, or public administration. -Knowledge of basic computer literacy including Microsoft products Word and Excel. Second language written and spoken considered. SUMMER COLLEGE INTERN - 10234 Qualifications As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year). NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
