The mission of the Special Operations Team is to promote and deliver exceptional operational support to the operations of the Fire Service within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, by providing professional, efficient, high quality support services to the local incident commander in a timely manner.
There are three teams that cover the Commonwealth: North, South and West. There are currently openings on all three teams. This is a part-time contract position with no benefits.
Ongoing employment is contingent upon meeting metrics on training attendance, completion of equipment checks and response to emergency calls.This requires that all employees work a minimum of 75 hours a year.
The duties of a special operations technician are:
Drive large vehicles and trailers to emergency and planned events
Respond to emergency and planned events as part of the Special Operations Team
Operate complex equipment at emergency scenes and planned events, including but not limited to communications equipment and radios, drones, computers, audio visual equipment and off-road vehicles
Conduct maintenance, inspection, inventory and repairs that may include but not limited to Vehicles, UTVs, Trailers, Drones, Radios, IT Systems
Attend team training to enhance technician skills
Maintain a database, which includes call logs, inventory, photos, videos, maps and other data
May be assigned role as a Commercial Driver if licensed
May be assigned role as a Drone Pilotif certified
Allpersons holding a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and who perform duties requiring a CDL for the Department of Fire Services,whether temporarily or permanently,at any time will be required to undergo controlled substances and at our discretion, alcohol testing prior toemployment and will be subject to further testing throughout their period of employment.
Qualifications - External
Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
Two years of experience as a DFS Employee, a firefighter, MA Hazardous Materials Technician, a Commercial Driver, Public Safety Communications, or in a fire service leadership position
Possession of a valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to solve complex problems and make decisions
Able to respond to incidents 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when available
Ability to travel to assigned locations, which could be any community in the Commonwealth
Able to work all shifts: days, nights, weekends, holidays
Able to work as part of a team, performing like duties to meet the organizational objectives
Able to take direction and follow instructions without deviating from the planned objectives
Able to accomplish assigned work with little or no supervision
Knowledgeof ICS System
Knowledge of and ability to operate computers, radios, audio visual and telecommunications equipment
Certification in appropriate field: UAS Part 107 Drone Pilot, Commercial Driver’s License, Communications Unit Leader, Communications Unit Technician
