Specialty Human Services

We are a Division of Great American Insurance Group serving the Human and Social Services sector for more than 40 years. Since 1980, we’ve been Protecting Those Who Improve Your Community® and were one of the first carriers to offer niche coverage solutions to nonprofit and service organizations. SHS works with agents to address the coverage needs and loss exposures of more than 16,000 social service and non-profit organizations across the country.

SHS is currently looking for an Intern in our downtown Cincinnati Office. The Internship Position involves a combination of activities aimed at giving an intern a full understanding of a Great American Claims department and how it interacts with other functions within the organization. The program is a potential pathway to a career in insurance. Internships typically consist of a 10-week period over the summer.

We are accepting resumes for SHS Claims Internship candidates starting employment in April-May and lasting through the summer of 2025.

Responsibilities:

Within the SHS division, interns will work on meaningful assignments and gain exposure to a variety of claims functions, including: claims handling, analysis, investigation, and negotiation. To gain a broader perspective of the business, interns will have the opportunity to meet with individuals who work in the other various functions within the group.

Responsibilities will include:

Participating in special projects within the claims and operations groups as assigned.

Learning about claim handling assignments within SHS including:  initial coverage analysis, first contact, investigation, resolution strategy, technical letter writing, and negotiation.

Working with the operations team to enter new loss information, update the litigation database, and perform other operations team functions.

Learning and performing functions utilizing the various claims systems, programs, and databases.

Various reading assignments, self-study courses, and case studies on a diverse range of topics intended to build a foundation of claims and general insurance knowledge.

The Intern will also participate in seminars and workshops provided by Claims College and Great American University.

Networking:

Claims interns will participate in activities with other interns, employees, and leaders throughout the organization. In addition to on-the-job learning, interns also attend lunch-and-learns to further develop their business knowledge. The SHS Claim Intern will also participate in the organization wide Claim Intern Program, meeting regularly with claim interns across the divisions and lines of business.

Qualifications:

Proven leadership skills through work experience (prior internship/co-ops are a plus), campus involvement, or extracurricular activities.
