Specimen Handler
Job Title: Specimen HandlerJob Description Specimen handlers will take samples from processors after labeling and bring them to the handling area. They will bring samples to the centrifuging area and handle the enclosed samples with PPE without directly touching open swabs or performing tests on the samples. The role supports urine pour-offs prior to testing and involves moving samples between buildings, sometimes walking outside between other labs on campus to cart or carry samples around. Duties include multi-tasking between different specimen handling functions, collecting specimens from all processing stations and delivering them to the specimen handling area, understanding and adhering to strict quality regulations and prescribed SOPs, preparing SST specimens for RSA and/or manual pour-off, placing specimens in a centrifuge for spinning, performing all required maintenance procedures, documenting issues in a log book, communicating problems to upper management, manually processing and pouring off specimens, sorting processed specimens into racks for delivery into the lab by pour-off groups, and carrying and pushing at least 30 pounds around the laboratory. Work Site This is a fully on-site position in ELMWOOD PARK, New Jersey. Work Environment Standing for the entirety of the shift. Handle samples with PPE. Move samples after processing to different areas of the laboratory to be tested. Pour off urine samples and send the rest of the sample to the mapping area for storage. Carry samples to different lab departments prior to testing or post-testing. Carry 10-15 pounds. Work primarily in one area with rare need to move to different buildings/work stations. However, if working in certain buildings, walking outside between buildings may be required to move samples around. The role involves standing for long periods and lots of walking for sample movement between stations.
