Gundersen has an opportunity available for a new graduate with a Master’s degree in Communicative Disorders.  Complete your Clinical Fellowship Year with Gundersen Health System! We are seeking a Speech Pathologist with interest in working with adults in an inpatient hospital setting.  Primary responsibilities would include providing evaluation and treatment services to patients on our acute care units and recently renovated CARF Certified 20-bed adult Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. Skill in serving patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and other neurogenic diseases/disorders is required. Competency with tests/protocols for language impairment, motor speech disorders, cognitive impairment, right hemisphere dysfunction, basic voice disorders, and dysphagia is indicated. Proficiency with video fluoroscopy preferred. The selected candidate will be required to provide weekend coverage, working every other Saturday and designated holidays. This open position is currently limited to a term of 13 months. Ongoing employment after completion of the Clinical Fellowship is a consideration if program growth/patient needs support such, but is not guaranteed. This position supports the opportunity to work in a highly collegial environment with multiple disciplines.

The Speech and Language Pathologist Fellow (SLPF) in their clinical role evaluates and assesses individuals of all ages who have medical problems or other health related conditions impacting language, motor speech, cognition, right hemisphere dysfunction, basic voice, and dysphagia. The SLPF develops a plan of care and provides treatment techniques and interventions to restore and improve function. The SLPF provides services and elements of patient/client care management leading to optimal outcomes according to the relevant state Speech and Language Pathology Practice Standards. The SLPF works collaboratively with all multidisciplinary team to accomplish the vision and mission of Gundersen Health System. The SLPF will be mentored by an individual holding American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification in Speech and Language Pathology and will adhere to the Clinical Fellowship standards set by ASHA.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Works with patients and families to examine, evaluate, diagnose, prognose, and intervene to insure optimal outcomes. Also consults and educates the patient and other care-givers as needed.

2. The SLPF works with the referring provider and other clinical staff in providing optimal care of the patient through appropriate timely methods of communication including, but not limited to, complete and accurate patient chart notes and face-to-face consultations

3. Interacts and practices in collaboration with a variety of professions, communicates value of Speech and Language services.

4. Responsible for completing documentation according to established departmental standards to enhance effective patient care and proper reimbursement.

5. Meets standards of practice according to federal, state, and professional association guidelines. Maintains and achieves proficiency in departmental competencies.

6. Teaches and counsels individuals, families, groups, and community.

7. Participates in departmental and multidisciplinary review of process, treatment, or systems issues for quality improvement initiatives.

8. Pursues relevant educational opportunities to maintain or enhance professional knowledge and meet departmental needs.

9. The SLPF, to the best of her/his capabilities and talents, works with other Gundersen Health System personnel in fulfilling the mission and vision statements of the organization.

10. Works under the supervision of the designated mentor in accordance with ASHA standards. Openly receives feedback as an opportunity to learn and grow professionally.

11. Adheres to regular and predictable attendance.

12. Personally interacts, engages with and cares for patients.

13. Ensures patient safety.

14. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.
