Inpatient Speech Pathologist

A Speech Pathologist diagnoses and treats conditions that affect one’s ability to communicate and swallow. As experts in communication, these specialists assess, diagnose, treat and prevent speech, language, voice and swallowing disorders from birth through old age. Speech Pathologists can help patients improve their speech, open new communication possibilities, and improve their ability to comprehend others, express oneself, communicate more effectively in social settings, swallow safely. 

A caregiver in this position works 8:00am – 4:30pm and is required to work four weekend days per 8-week period.  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

Evaluate patients and apply a wide variety of therapeutic techniques for the rehabilitation of patients with functional limitations, impairments and disorders. 

Provide, interpret, plan and supervise patient evaluations and treatments in accordance with the physician referral, ensuring the care, safety and wellbeing of the patient. 

Continually review the plan of care and make revisions as needed. 

Prepare progress reports on all treatments in conjunction with departmental policies and procedures and report to the physician as needed. 

Instruct and counsel medical staff and family members to assist the patient in treatment techniques. 

Perform voice evaluations, treatment of various voice disorders and bedside swallow evaluations. 

Demonstrate competency with the MBSs for adults and pediatrics. 

Follow Code Blue protocol as per Clinic policy. 

Adhere to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined by JCAHO. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Masters, Doctorate or SLP-D Degree from an accredited school of Speech-Language Pathology.  

Registered in the State of Florida. 

License in the State of Florida.  

ASHA certification. 

Hold or be eligible for a Speech-Language Pathology License (SP) from the State Board of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology. 

Hold (SP) license in current state upon start date. 

Hold Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). 

Externship experience.  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

Experience with medical speech pathology.  

Flexibility to float between sites.

Physical Requirements:

Work is medium/frequent lifting and carrying equipment, supplies and materials up to 50 pounds without help of mechanical devices or other personnel. Stooping, pushing and pulling when moving patients or equipment into position for treatment. Reaching for, handling, feeling and manipulation of equipment and patients.Talking and hearing to convey instruction and information to patient and staff member.Visual acuity to perceive reactions to treatment and to follow or read instruction. The occupant of this position spends 98% of his/her time in air-conditioned areas the remainder in outside areas.The potential for exposure to blood and blood-borne pathogens is present while completing clinical duties.This position requires reasoning, mathematical and English language skills.Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team.
