Sports Specialist (Group Exercise)
Summary This position is located within the N92 division of Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, NAS JRB New Orleans, La. located in Belle Chasse, La. The purpose of this position is to provide assistance and support for the MWR fitness, sports, and deployed support program by providing group exercise classes for 1-4 hours per week. You must include any class certifications with your application package. Responsibilities .Provides certified personal training services to all eligible patrons. Provides fitness training and programming to groups of various sizes. Designs, supervises, coaches, and instructs a variety of group exercise programs (e.g., Step, Spin, Water Aerobics) inside and outside of the various fitness facilities in the assigned workout areas. Assists with fitness and MWR events (competitions, challenges, races). Instructs patrons on the proper use of all equipment for training and self-monitored progress by preparing written instructions and procedures for the performance of work, use of equipment, safety and well-being of all involved. Assists patrons on the fitness floor by providing training tips in order to prevent unsafe or ineffective exercise techniques. Prepares written instructions and procedures for performance of work, use of equipment, safety, and well-being of all involved. Provides instructions on the proper implementation and maintenance of conditioning and training programs for aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, and flexibility training. Conducts fitness testing, which includes measuring aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, and blood pressure. Stays current with latest fitness programming ideas to increase attendance and improve customer satisfaction. Conducts fitness orientation classes which include providing patrons with a tour of the facility, reviewing rules and regulations, and introducing patrons to cardiovascular, free-weight, and resistance machines Establishes/reviews the schedule of events, conducts tours, sets-up/prepares gymnasiums/facilities/playing fields prior to scheduled start time for fitness events Ensures adherence to regulations and safety procedures Provides certified personal training and group exercise services to active duty military as outlined in the Navy's Physical Readiness Program instruction. Assists with the instruction of the Command Fitness Leader course and fitness related general military training. Works with various command representatives to develop and implement physical fitness programs for military personnel. Assists Fitness Director and/or Coordinator with outreach and implementation of Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling Series (NOFFS), Mission Nutrition/ Command Fitness Leader Courses, and other CNIC Headquarters supported/endorsed programs. Ensures facility and sporting fields are open and/or closed at the posted time. Monitors and checks the security of premises Monitors activity within the facility, circulating among the patrons to assist with basic use of equipment/gear and to maintain good order and discipline Ensures athletic playing surfaces are properly maintained, safe, and ready for play Assists in properly cleaning and maintaining equipment/facilities, maintains inventory, performs general janitorial services to ensure interior spaces are in a clean, neat, and orderly state at all times (e.g. sweeping and mopping floors; dusting and cleaning workout areas, mirrors, bathrooms, and locker areas; straightening equipment and accessories, etc.) Makes minor repairs to facilities and equipment when appropriate and assists with outdoor maintenance Reports/records maintenance problems, material deficiencies, and unsafe conditions or discrepancies that cannot be repaired in-house to the supervisor Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Must possess a current certification from a NCCA or DEAC health/fitness organization. Ability to competently and independently carry out fitness programs through the proper application of principles, concepts and techniques of recreation to satisfy specific needs of the community to be served. Skill in planning and carrying out an enhanced program in the recreation specialty area which meets the needs of the participating community Skill and ability to provide fitness training and programming to individuals and groups of various sizes Knowledge of the safe use and operation of fitness equipment, facility operations, and basic fitness equipment maintenance/repair Ability to conduct accurate fitness testing and provide recommended fitness program, based on fitness goals Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Programs (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) Ability to prepare clear, concise, and technically sound reports related to work within the Branch Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. The two elements below sufficiently qualify an individual to perform their duties as a group fitness instructor: 1. a) Primary approved certification from a NCCA accredited health/fitness organization*, and 2. b) Approved certification in the physical activity or program area.
