Element has an opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated Sprinkler Design Engineer to join our Safety Critical Certification Body. Working remotely (or from our Warrington facility) the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the certification process by conducting design reviews, technical assessments, and performing site inspections to ensure compliance with scheme regulations and standards. Responsibilities
Design Reviews:
Evaluate fire sprinkler and suppression system designs for compliance with our certification scheme and relevant UK and international standards, including:
BS EN 12845 (Fixed Firefighting Systems – Automatic Sprinkler Systems for Commercial and Industrial)BS 9251 & 16925 (Fire Sprinkler Systems for Domestic and Residential Occupancies)BS 8458 and BS 8489 (Water Mist Systems)Building Regulations / Code of practice and other applicable guidanceVerify hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, and system layouts to ensure compliance and operational efficiency
Site Inspections:
Conduct on-site evaluations of sprinkler and suppression systems, ensuring that installations align with approved designs Assess installation quality and adherence to industry best practices, identifying risks or non-compliancesDocument findings in comprehensive inspection reportsCertification Process:
Support the certification process by reviewing designs and inspecting installations to ensure systems meet safety, performance, and scheme requirementsMaintain records of assessments, inspections, and communications to ensure traceability and transparency throughout the certification lifecycleTraining and Development:
Stay current with industry standards and best practices, maintaining knowledge of UK-specific regulations and standards updatesParticipate in professional training and qualifications offered by leading bodies, including: BAFSA (British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association) training and certification programsRSA (Residential Sprinkler Association) qualificationsBAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) certification schemes for fire suppression systemsFPA (Fire Protection Association) courses on fire safety design, installation, and maintenanceContinuous Improvement:
Contribute to the development of internal policies and proceduresShare knowledge and expertise with colleagues Skills / QualificationsEssential:
Proven expertise in the design and assessment of fire sprinkler and suppression systemsIn-depth knowledge of design standards, including BS EN 12845 and / or BS EN 16925 and BS 9251 and/or BS 4548 and BS 8459Strong understanding of fire dynamics, system performance, and compliance requirementsProficiency in using hydraulic calculation and design softwareExcellent communication skills with the ability to produce clear, concise technical reports
Desirable:
Degree or equivalent qualification in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related STEM disciplineProfessional certifications or training from bodies such as BAFSA, RSA, BAFE, or FPAMembership with a relevant professional organisation, such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE)Experience working within a certification or regulatory body
