Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of the Position:
Product and process Development Engineer responsible for working within teams to develop process specifications for new products and processes and as necessary manage Prototype and Pilot Equipment Design for these new optical fiber manufacturing processes and products

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:
• Use established processes to identify concepts for manufacturing new and advantaged products and processes; and design, build and test selected product or process concepts as an individual and in teams, and utilize risk management tools to ensure on-time delivery
• Designing and executing product or process validation tests in a manufacturing plant; analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations
• Collaborating with other product or process design experts in other organizations
• Participating on cross functional teams
• Communicating and documenting results
• Cost of manufacturability analysis

 

Education & Experience:  
• M.S. degree in engineering/science field (chemical engineering, materials science); Ph.D. degree in similar discipline strongly encouraged
• 5-10 years’ work experience preferred

 

Required Skills:                                                
• Process engineering knowledge/experience commensurate with a Chemical Engineering degree and >5 years of manufacturing and/or development experience (coating, batch processing, deposition, forming, characterization techniques etc.…)
• Working knowledge of physical phenomena (static and dynamic physics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, optics, etc.) with a strong background in product and process integration
• The ability to work with other engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Materials) to create prototype product and process solutions
• Knowledge/experience in materials processing for manufacturing
• Ability to design and carry out experiments in lab and manufacturing environments
• Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Familiarity with 3-D CAD software (AutoDesk Inventor preferred)
• Sound understanding of material properties and capabilities for use in products or processes

 

Desired Skills:  
• Proficient in data analysis tools and techniques
• Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
• Knowledge of optical fiber properties, applications, and manufacturing
• Proficient in DMAIC and MEE methodologies for problem solving

 

Soft Skills:
• Strong independent work ethic
• Attention to detail with excellent organizational skill
• Ability to work interactively on cross functional teams with ties to Research and Early Stage Development and Manufacturing
• Ability to work interactively with commercial, product line and applications engineering functions and translate customer feedback into actionable technical work
• Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)

Hours of work:

8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday to Friday (40 hrs/week)

The range for this position is $96,991.00 - $133,363.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
