Job SummaryServices, maintains, repairs, cleans, test, adjusts, removes, constructs and operates electrical systems, equipment, machinery, control systems, UPS systems, emergency power systems, laboratory systems and alarm systems at the journeyman level. Works under general supervision or independently and may assist research staff or may direct the work of other electricians, trades or contracted personnel. Highly knowledgeable in electrical theory, codes, requirements, procedure and techniques in safely performing assigned duties. Work with up to medium voltage circuits.
Responsibilities Performs duties of an electrician, with the added responsibility and authority to direct the installation, operation, modification, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of critical electrical distribution or control systems installed at Battelle. Advises management and makes recommendations on matters related to the critical site systems assigned. May be required to have multiple skills and training encompassing several trade skills and specialties.Plans, conducts, inspects, and documents installation and maintenance activities on the critical site systems assigned. Establishes and implements the system testing program, tracks system performance, defines actual and potential problems, and implements corrective actions as necessary, avoiding disruption to ongoing activities. Ensures the system operations and documentation are in compliance with UL, state, and local regulations, as well as applicable client and government standards.Performs self-development activities sufficient to maintain senior level skills and certifications and assists in training and coordinating activities of lower level staff. May be required to receive specialized training or certification to perform duties normally performed by factory authorized and trained technicians.Assumes supervisory duties when staff or contractors are assigned to assist on related work.May be required to work after normal business hours including weekends to perform electrical work as considered necessary by the need to minimize business disruption. Work may be conducted indoors or out.Maintains files of system organization, original designs and modifications, and specifications. May control and update blueprints, schematics, and alarm and control system diagrams. Generates reports from field inspections; provides relevant information on system performance and capabilities as requested.Coordinates with engineering, HVAC, security operations, and other departments to accomplish timely installation and maintenance of devices that are a shared part of the site critical system.Performs special tasks requiring similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.Must maintain an adequate inventory of spare parts to keep systems running smoothly with minimum downtime; monitor system performance and demand to ensure compliance with safety and energy savings guidelines.Report on the status of assigned equipment maintenance, repairs, capacities and efficiency to supervision.Prepare written requirements for repairs or for ordering parts from suppliers. Develop work procedures which identify tasks/steps, and conduct hazard analyses.Coordinate with other facility's staff and contractor's staff to accomplish work on new and renovated labs, and ensures compliance with applicable Battelle guidelines as well as national, state and local regulations and requirements.Develop and implement an effective preventive maintenance program using the site's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); perform preventive/predictive maintenance, repairs, and adjustments on system controls; monitors and records effectiveness of maintenance activities; take corrective action when necessary to ensure the safety and reliability of critical systems in a laboratory environment.Key Qualifications Must have experience equivalent to journeyman level and experience handling up to medium voltage distribution switching and related electrical work.May require training, licensing, or certification for installing and maintaining site critical systems, such as the fire alarm system, site security system, emergency power system, building automation system, variable frequency drives, laboratory systems, and HVAC systems.Specialized safety training, radiation worker training and protective equipment including respirators may be required. Work exposes individual to possible bodily injury from electric shock or explosion, falls, and other hazards encountered in an industrial laboratory environment.Requires the physical ability to perform medium difficulty work, including lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling materials and tools; ability to climb ladders, maintain balance, stoop, kneel and crouch to gain access to electrical wiring; ability to handle and read meters and tool accessories; acuity of vision for close work; depth of perception, field of vision, and color vision for making electrical connections and for soldering and splicing wires.May be required to obtain certain government security clearances, receive inoculations against certain diseases, conduct work in biohazard areas, and conduct work in radiation hazard areas.Would have a thorough journeyman level experience with a minimum of 5 years working on equipment and systems in a regulation-driven environment.May require using a communication device such as a cellular phone, or two-way radio during and after normal business hours including weekends and responding to emergency situations such as power outages, equipment failures, and natural disasters.Must be self-motivated and have the ability to be productive with little or no direct supervision.Initiative to actively pursue opportunities and training to maintain craft specialty skills and certifications required to perform assigned tasks.Must have experience in effectively directing assigned personnel.Must be familiar with the operation of a personal computer and Microsoft office Word, Excel and Outlook. Must have experience with software commonly used for tracking and reporting system status in CMMS systems.Must have good oral and written communication skills, good customer service skills, and ability to follow through and carry out assignments.
