About Pinterest:

Millions of people across the world come to Pinterest to find new ideas every day. It’s where they get inspiration, dream about new possibilities and plan for what matters most. Our mission is to help those people find their inspiration and create a life they love. In your role, you’ll be challenged to take on work that upholds this mission and pushes Pinterest forward. You’ll grow as a person and leader in your field, all the while helping Pinners make their lives better in the positive corner of the internet.

Creating a life you love also means finding a career that celebrates the unique perspectives and experiences that you bring. As you read through the expectations of the position, consider how your skills and experiences may complement the responsibilities of the role. We encourage you to think through your relevant and transferable skills from prior experiences.

Our new progressive work model is called PinFlex, a term that’s uniquely Pinterest to describe our flexible approach to living and working. Visit our PinFlex landing page to learn more.

The Inclusive AI team is part of the Advanced Technologies Group (ATG), Pinterest’s advanced machine learning team. ATG’s goal is to keep Pinterest at the forefront of machine learning technology across multiple use cases including recommendations, ranking, content understanding, and more. It is an applied team that works horizontally across the company on state of the art AI and ML and works on directly bringing that technology to the product in collaboration with product engineering teams. The team also publishes its work in applied research conferences, but the main goal of the team is to have top line metrics impact.

At Pinterest our goal is to inspire pinners (our users) to live the life they love. The product is powered by state of the art ML algorithms which are used to understand both the billions of visually rich items on the platform and the interests of our 500M+ monthly active users and recommend inspiring personalized content to them. What this means is that ML at Pinterest is not only multi-modal utilizing image, text, and graph signals as input, but it needs to operate at a very large scale and often in a real time interactive user experience.

Pinterest is known for being a positive and inspirational place on the internet and we believe that inspiration starts with inclusion. The Inclusive AI team is a horizontal team that works across the company on both ML Fairness, GenAI safety,  and user facing features which make our product more inclusive so we can better serve our diverse user base. This includes our launches of groundbreaking features such as user controllable skin tone and hair pattern search refinements and more recently body type. All of those features are powered by work coming from the Inclusive AI team and more about that can be found here: [1, 2].

We are looking for a Sr. ML Engineer to join our Inclusive AI team, where you will drive cross-team engineering efforts in the Responsible AI / ML Fairness space. You will work closely with other engineering teams, partner on experimentation, and improve ML models across various product surfaces. Additionally, you will mentor junior engineers, stay ahead of industry trends, and collaborate with senior leaders to define and implement our technical strategy in Responsible AI. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects, build large-scale systems, and make a significant impact on both our platform and user experience.

What you'll do:

Lead projects focused on identifying, avoiding, and mitigating bias in a diverse range of ML applications, including Generative AI. Collaborate with various engineering teams to create, evaluate, and adopt Responsible AI tools across Pinterest. Build state-of-the-art technology using advanced machine learning methods to personalize the Pinterest experience, with a focus on making our product more Inclusive. Partner with multiple teams to experiment with and improve ML models for various product surfaces, gaining holistic ML knowledge across domains like RecSys, LLMs, Representation Learning, Ads, Shopping, and Search. Contribute to high-impact environments through quick experimentation and product launches. Stay updated on industry trends in Responsible AI recommendation systems and apply data-driven methods to enhance model performance.

What we're looking for:

Experience with state-of-the-art ML Fairness techniques and Responsible AI principles. Proficiency in advanced ML approaches such as representation learning, transformer-based architectures, generative modeling, and large language models (LLMs). Expertise in large-scale data processing tools and frameworks like Hive, Scalding, Spark, Kafka, Hadoop, and MapReduce. Hands-on experience in building, deploying, and measuring ML Fairness at a large scale, bridging advanced techniques to real-world impacts. 4+ years of experience working within engineering teams on large-scale ML-driven user-facing products, with strong project management skills. Masters or PhD in Comp Sci or related fields. Passion for applied ML, Pinterest product, and working on the Inclusive/Responsible AI space
