WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:
On-Site: This role is on-site five days a week at our headquarters in Del Mar due to the nature of the work involved.
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
The Sr. Manager of Mechanical Engineering at Tandem Diabetes Care oversees and manages the mechanical engineering team responsible for designing, developing, modifying, and evaluating components and assemblies for fixtures used in testing, development, and manufacturing of the Company’s medical devices. A packaging engineer will also report to this manager. This individual ensures the mechanical design team operates effectively, efficiently, and meets project timelines. Sr Managers also assess the outcomes of design and development projects to confirm alignment with technical objectives. Additionally, this role includes management of the machine shop, with the machine shop manager reporting directly to this position.
The Sr. Manager of Mechanical Engineering also:
Leads multiple teams of engineers, designers, and machinists to design and develop mechanical components and systems, supporting the design, testing, prototyping, and manufacturing of the Company’s medical devices and packaging. Assesses priorities and capacity across functions to meet project timelines effectively. Oversees planning and execution of design, prototyping, fabrication, modification, and evaluation of mechanical systems, components, equipment, and packaging. Trains and mentors managers and engineers within the Engineering Services team, fostering professional growth. Ensures compliance with Quality System and Design Controls through thorough documentation and leadership. Prepares and presents reports on technical project outcomes, including actionable recommendations. Manages projects in a high-demand, multi-project environment, coordinating staff, subcontractors, and external services. Guides teams in establishing design requirements, creating detailed specifications, and executing design verification for customer acceptance. Supports teams in identifying and procuring the necessary tools for development and verification testing. Collaborates cross-functionally with R&D and Manufacturing teams to align mechanical design efforts and priorities. Motivates and manages staff to integrate seamlessly with product development, research, and manufacturing teams. Partners with Operations and Manufacturing Engineering to review, troubleshoot, and repair automation and assembly fixtures, ensuring product quality, yield, and uptime. Coordinates with other departments, balancing company-wide priorities in decision-making. Oversees staff selection, development, performance appraisals, and career advancement. Supports the short-term planning for the department including headcount, budgeting, training, and systems requirements. Ensures department staff is properly trained, per designated training plan, before assuming job responsibilities. Develops and manages staff schedules, performance requirements, and departmental plans for headcount, budgeting, training, and resource needs. Ensures staff training and compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA, and other legal and regulatory requirements.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Proven ability to lead collaborative team efforts and effectively organize resources to achieve team objectives. Skilled at effectively communicating department or area issues and results within and across functional areas and conducting presentations of technical information concerning specific projects or timelines. Able to gain cooperation of others. Skilled at effectively leading a cooperative team effort and organizing resources to achieve team goals. Able to make and prioritize process and resource decisions based on overall team needs. Experience with integration in manufacturing environments, including transferring work products to production. Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying issues and results across functional areas, presenting technical information, and fostering cooperation among stakeholders. Proficiency in SolidWorks and 3D modelling and part documentation. Proficient in MS Office Suite, internet tools, utility software, testing, and tracking tools. Thorough knowledge of Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and their application in technical environments. Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant job experience. Advanced coursework, a master’s degree in engineering or business (MBA), professional licensure, or relevant certifications are preferred. 10 years of combined engineering and management experience, including: Leading engineering teams. Full development lifecycle involvement. Experience in medical devices or other regulated industries. Less experience may be considered for candidates with direct expertise in medical device development and machine shop operations.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The starting base pay range for this position is $145,900 to $186,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus, equity, and a robust benefits package.
Tandem offers health care benefits such as medical, dental, vision available your first day, as well as health savings accounts and flexible saving accounts. You’ll also receive 11 paid holidays per year, a minimum of 20 days of paid time off (with accrual starting on day 1) and you will have access to a 401k plan with company match as well as an Employee Stock Purchase plan.
