Sr Packaging Engineer I – NA Packaging Development R&D

Make It With Pride.** This is a Packaging Development R&D position in the NA Business Unit (US and Canada) responsible for delivering against the Productivity, Waste and Quality agendas, physically located in the strategic location of East Hanover, NJ. The individual must possess experience in package development and plant trial execution in the commercialization process in a fast-paced environment. **How you will contribute** • Primary responsibilities will be to lead and maintain an agenda for NA projects in Productivity Commercialization, Pipeline Building & Scoping, Waste Reduction, Quality Improvement and Business Continuity Planning. A strong technical understanding of Packaging Specifications is required for harmonization activities and commercializing robust performance-based specs. This is accomplished through implementation of large network wide programs in paperboard cartons, corrugated cases, rigid plastic trays and flexible film. • Execute Productivity programs with high demand activities across the NA manufacturing network in Mexico, US and Canada, covering all products including Biscuits, Chocolate and Candy. Lead and drive programs from concept initiation through commercialization. Develop timelines, risk assessment and contingency plans to ensure execution on projects with limited supervision. • Strong technical understanding of each of the packaging components, our packaging suppliers and the manufacturing network, in order to continually build and maintain the short-, medium- and long-term Productivity Pipeline. Influence others and champion productivity ideas through scoping to project approvals to commercialization. • Strong technical understanding of packaging specifications to improve the quality of the content, as well as identify harmonization opportunities. Understanding of critical spec attributes to implement performance-based specs. Assess a spec portfolio and find areas of opportunity to harmonize. • Follow the i2m process for assigned projects and keep communication with key stakeholders for implementation. This includes participating in project update meetings led by PCM or a key cross functional team members Provide accurate status update with sufficient technical knowledge and in a timely manner to avoid potential delays on project ATOs. Input and participate in regular Productivity leadership and approval meetings. • Lead plant trials for packaging materials, working with cross-functional teams (Marketing, Procurement, Business Development, Production, Supply Chain and Quality). Properly plan, coordinate and report each trial, provide appropriate level of technical support and troubleshooting to execute trial objectives and ensure proper documentation of each activity. • Design, plan and conduct analytical testing, line trials and package performance testing. • Build and maintain relationships and constant communication with key pack material vendors on the development of new concepts, materials, and quality improvements. • Leverage and challenge suppliers and partners to develop new technologies and cost advantage packaging formats and materials to achieve business goals. • Ability to generate, develop and execute packaging ideas by leveraging both existing equipment in the company and new equipment. • Troubleshoot issues that arise from package development, line trials and commercialization with limited supervision. **More about this role** **What you need to know about this position:** • Experience working in a Research, Development and Quality function. • Experience managing projects within a plant environment (Product Development, Process Technology, New Product Commercialization, etc.). • Planning and project management abilities. • Experience in package development processes. • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills. • Experience in development, trials and commercialization of packaging initiatives. • Desired: Strong technical material skill set and ability to develop a productivity pipeline and commercialize **What extra ingredients you will bring:** • Packaging Materials: apply technical material knowledge to current projects; provide technical based solutions. • Packaging Equipment: apply knowledge of equipment, operation, capacities, limitations, and potential mechanical shortfalls. • Packaging Evaluation: apply knowledge of test methodologies for packaging materials specification development. Identify gaps within internal testing capabilities. Be able to recommend additional critical parameters as well as be able to outline procedures and work with quality teams. • Graphics: apply knowledge around the printing process to determine how it affects package performance. Effectively apply to business issues and make appropriate recommendations. • Product Packaging interactions: apply knowledge of product, process, and package interactions along with modes of failure to make material recommendations and narrow down variables during development process. • Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of the organization. • Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to effectively communicate to all levels within the organization. • Ability to get results through working with a diverse team. • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage complexity. • Executional excellence, time management and problem-solving competencies. **Education:** Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline. **Job specific requirements:** A minimum of 5 yrs. experience is required preferably in the food industry with a proven track record of executing successful plant trials for R&D. **Travel requirements:** Ability to travel up to 20% of the time for domestic vendor/manufacturing visits. **Work schedule:** This role is based onsite at our East Hanover, NJ facility, with opportunities for hybrid work flexibility. **Salary and Benefits:** The anticipated base salary range for this position is $81,700 to $112,375; the exact salary depends on several factors such as experience, skills, education, and budget. The salary range may vary based on geographic location. In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for participation in a highly competitive bonus program with possibility for overachievement based on performance and company results. .
