WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:
On-Site: This role is on-site five days a week at our headquarters in Del Mar due to the nature of the work involved.
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
A senior team member that will own the development and design verification of sterile and protective packaging solutions to ensure device integrity throughout sterilization, storage, transportation, and use. Designs for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging will be verified to comply with functional, regulatory, and marketing requirements. Will manage packaging verification and validation testing.

Acts as the Primary owner of the development and design of the primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging for Tandem’s pumps and supplies that include sterile packaging that is used with various sterilization methods. Participates in determining packaging design approaches, parameters, and requirements. Collaborates with the Marketing and Product Management teams to align on corporate branding, packaging themes, and styles. Collaborates with operations on the packaging design to ensure that the selected design, materials and processes meet operational cost and throughput requirements. Supports packaging development and sustaining engineering activities for multiple products in various stages of development and commercialization. Ensures sterile barrier integrity and compliance through comprehensive testing and validation. Collaborates with Tandem’s Supply Chain to negotiate costs, timelines, and deliverables for packaging projects and external suppliers for supply of materials and package verification testing. Manages packaging verification and validation testing, including protocols and reports, vendor coordination, testing facility oversight, sample allocation and tracking, and resolving logistical issues with test facilities. Oversee testing activities at external laboratories and ensure compliance with relevant standards and test protocols. Contributes to the review of vendor capability to support packaging development and production. May identify and drive adoption of new suppliers. Support the Operations teams in the selection and qualification of packaging equipment. Conducts and documents Gap Assessments for revisions of standards and determines whether further testing is required to comply with the new revision. Supports sustainability initiatives while meeting stringent regulatory and customer requirements. Embraces the Design Control process by conducting and participating in formal and informal design reviews. Confirms completion of required training plan before assuming job responsibilities. Ensures work is performed in compliance with company policies including Privacy/HIPAA and other regulatory, legal, and safety requirements. Supports other departments as needed and considers project-wide impacts in decision making.WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Has working knowledge of federal and other regulations (ASTM D4169, ASTM D4332, ASTM D7386, ISTA 2A, ISO 11607, ISO/TS 16775, and FDA 21 CFR Part 820). Experience with a variety of packaging materials (films, coated paper, paperboard, Tyvek, plastics, etc.). Experience with packaging verification testing (sterile barrier, seal strength, aging, drop tests). Experience with managing prototype and production trials at suppliers. Experience with Solid Works/PDM/PLM software and best practices. Able to assert own ideas and persuade others through effectively consolidating, evaluating, and presenting relevant information. Skilled at promoting team cooperation and a commitment to team success. Adept at seeing change as an opportunity to improve business performance and campaigning for it when necessary. Competent with MS Office and Internet. Bachelor’s degree in packaging engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and applicable job experience. 5 years of experience in the field including detailed design, testing, testing documentation, and prototype fabrication of packaging, including experience with conceptual design to market release.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The starting base pay range for this position is $96,000 - $120,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus, equity, and a robust benefits package.
Tandem offers health care benefits such as medical, dental, vision available your first day, as well as health savings accounts and flexible saving accounts. You’ll also receive 11 paid holidays per year, a minimum of 20 days of paid time off (with accrual starting on day 1) and you will have access to a 401k plan with company match as well as an Employee Stock Purchase plan.
