How you will contribute

You will independently coordinate technical work for projects in line with RDQ, marketing and manufacturing requirements, effectively communicating status and risks, and coordinate projects to determine appropriate packaging specification information using sampling and supplier management and pilot-plant and factory trials in accordance with good manufacturing practice and HACCP requirements. In this role, you will also develop activities such as packaging design and specifications, scale up, commissioning, etc., and plan for the effective use of resources including the use of external agencies and suppliers. To succeed in this role, you will use your understanding of equipment design and manufacturing processes to ensure that packaging specifications are determined with excellence. You will be accountable for stakeholder management and influencing decisions based on conclusions derived from the analysis and interpretation of results; develop and leverage connections both internally and with the external technical community; and create intellectual property to drive competitive advantage.

•    Execute the packaging programs supporting Bar projects with high demand activities across the NA bakery network, from concept initiation through commercialization.  Developing timelines, risk assessment and contingency plans to ensure execution on projects with limited supervision.
•    Lead and maintain an agenda for key projects including innovation, brand maintenance, capacity expansions, productivity, quality and BCPs.
•    Follow I2M process for assigned projects and keep communication with key stakeholders for implementation. This includes participating in project update meetings led by PCM or marketing and provide accurate status and with a high technical knowledge and in a timely manner to avoid potential delays on project ATOs.
•    Coordinate/lead manufacturing trials for packaging materials, working with cross-functional teams (Marketing, Procurement, Business Development, Production, Supply Chain and Quality). Properly plan, coordinate and report each trial, provide appropriate level of technical support and troubleshooting to execute trial objectives and ensure proper documentation of each activity.
•    Design, coordinate and conduct analytical testing, line trials and package performance testing.
•    Build and maintain relationships and communication with key material vendors on new concepts, materials, and quality improvements.
•    Leverage and challenge suppliers and partners to develop new technologies/concepts and cost advantage packaging formats and materials to achieve business goals.
•    Ability to generate, develop and execute packaging ideas by leveraging both existing equipment in the network and new equipment.
•    Troubleshoot issues that arise from package development, line trials and commercialization with limited supervision.

The individual must possess strong technical skills, the ability to learn on the fly and execute independently by leveraging their expertise and experience.  This candidate must demonstrate the ability to be a strong team player representing Packaging R&D and be able to effectively communicate to key stakeholders like Business Development, Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality, as well as the US cross functional team including Marketing, PCDM, Product and Process Development.

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL EXPERTISE:        
•    Experience working in a Research, Development and Quality function    
•    Experience managing projects within a manufacturing environment (Product or Pack Development, Process Technology, New Product Commercialization, etc.)        
•    Planning and project management abilities        
•    Experience in package development processes    
•    Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
•    Experience in development, trials, and commercialization of packaging initiatives    
•    Experience with flexibles, paperboard, and corrugated materials
•    Experience with creating die-lines, specifications, artwork process and mockups creation
COMPETENCIES/ABILITIES:  
•    Packaging Materials: apply technical material knowledge to current projects; provide technical based solutions.
•    Packaging Equipment: apply knowledge of equipment, operation, capacities, limitations, and potential mechanical shortfall.
•    Packaging Evaluation: apply knowledge of test methodologies for packaging materials specification. development. Identify gaps within internal testing capabilities. Be able to recommend additional critical parameters as well as be able to outline procedures and work with quality teams.
•    Graphics: apply knowledge around the printing process to determine how it affects package performance.  Effectively apply to business issues and make appropriate recommendations.
•    Product Packaging interactions: apply knowledge of product, process, and package interactions along with modes of failure to make material recommendations and narrow down variables during development process.
•    Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of the organization.
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to effectively communicate to all levels within the organization.
•    Ability to get results through working with a diverse team.
•    Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage complexity.

Education / Certifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline.

Job specific requirements:

A minimum of 5 yrs. experience is required preferably in the food industry. 

Travel requirements:

Ability to travel up to 20% of the time for domestic vendor/manufacturing visits.

Work schedule:

This role is based onsite at our East Hanover, NJ facility, with opportunities for hybrid work flexibility.
