Sr Project Manager, IPA & Global Risk Integration – West Coast, Remote

The Operational Design team, part of Optum Care Operations, is creating a playbook of experience, vision, and strategy for how customers interact with Optum Care Operations within a given journey across all channels and products.


By working with key partners throughout Operations, IT, Product, and the Markets we plan to establish the operational guides that drives an improved experience for our providers and patients while reducing operational cost, delivering increased quality, and positively enabling the Operations team to support our markets throughout the entire health journey.


This role provides project management and operational support for several of the line of business workstreams within the Operational Design program. We need team members with operational backgrounds ready to get into the weeds and help drive this program forward from the inside, not on the sidelines just facilitating meetings. This role is responsible for the coordination and completion of projects across various functional areas. Provides subject matter expertise in areas including project scope definition, risk identification, project methodology, resource allocation, facilitation and other areas of expertise based upon established project management techniques. Makes presentations to management on project updates, project cycle, and expected results. Ensures projects are completed on time and in scope. May manage vendor and service providers to define project scope and performance expectations. 


The individual formulates and defines scope and objectives through research and fact-finding combined with an understanding of applicable business systems and industry requirements. Performs research, analysis of business and user needs, documentation of requirements, and project management to support business decision making and business process requirements.

Primary Responsibilities:

Lead the implementation of various Blue-Chip Growth/Business projects for the West Region with applicable stakeholders (e.g., program/project charter, status updates, IRAAD, RACI etc.) Develop and maintain detailed project plans which include resource assignments, schedules, dependencies, etc. Obtain agreement on project scope from applicable stakeholders, and ensures that requirements sign-off is obtained Raise awareness of any misalignment or misunderstanding of project scope and objectives with applicable stakeholders Ensure that all impacted areas are identified, and that appropriate resources are engaged to participate in the scope definition process Ensure that project scope, requirements and approvals comply with current governance guidelines and methodology Monitor scope requirements and identify scope-related gaps and issues Ensure that all project dependencies/linkages are identified (e.g., inter-departmental activities, hardware, timelines, regulatory due dates Ensure that all project deliverables and success criteria are identified Manage/support project scope and objectives throughout the project lifecycle Establish/implement/comply with change management processes to drive effective project execution

Required Qualifications:

3+ years of experience as a Project Manager leading projects of various complexity and documenting project charters, project plans, IRAADs and other documents gathered from both business and IT counterparts 3+ years of proven success in leading programs/projects through the entire life cycle 1+ years of experience in Healthcare/Insurance or digital space Experience navigating complex problems and crafting unique and scalable solutions Experience running multiple projects independently, tackle obstacles and be proactive Experience assimilating information quickly, understanding relevant relationships and assessing and socializing upstream and downstream impacts with a sense of urgency IPA/MSO operations experience with system configuration and/or IPA payor/provider contract interpretation or network management Experience working in a highly variable, virtual, and matrixed environment Experience planning and executing project plans including work breakdown, resource estimates activity planning, resource scheduling, project administration, and status reporting Proficient in running a project plan including detailed task documentation and outcomes with an understanding of the difference between milestones and tasks that support milestones; ability to conform to existing project structure and naming conventions so we can easily move resources between projects Proficient in PC based software programs including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project, and Visio Proven attention to detail and great time management skills Proven excellent interpersonal skills; ability to build credibility and trust to engage parties in projects Proven competent in executive level communication with proficiency creating and delivering executive summaries; experience interacting with various levels of personnel, including middle, senior, lead positions as well as various levels of management Proven solid analytical skills Proven negotiation, facilitation, and consensus building skills


Preferred Qualifications:

PMP Certification Experience with Project Managing/implementing M&A, Risk Bearing Entity (RBE), Global Risk deals on behalf of the Business Experience working in a decentralized workplace environment, and in supporting remote teams Experience making ROI and metrics-based decisions Experience building and managing multiple internal and external stakeholder relationships Thorough understanding of healthcare systems (authorizations, claims, referrals, eligibility, provider, etc.); medical terminology; and HMO/managed care concepts Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills Proven ability to operate with minimal direction, self-imposed accountability and discipline Based in Pacific or Mountain Time zone

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
