Sr Staff Engineer - Communications Platform

The Communications Platform at Uber is responsible for building technology that enables a seamless communication channel technology that will facilitate both realtime & offline communications among Uber & its user community. This team focuses on providing a high performing, secure, reliable, and resilient ecosystem for seamless communications to all our users (Riders, Drivers, Eaters, Couriers, Restaurants, etc) through automated and innovative solutions. We are looking for someone with a passion for architecting and building highly scalable & highly-available, mission-critical systems that support millions of users during their communications experience with uber on a daily basis. This is a unique opportunity to build a tech/arch vision, create an impact delivering next generation communication experience, across choice of channels, for a variety of marketplace products/consumers across Uber’s global offerings disrupting the gig economy. We want to hear from you. **What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points** \-\-\-\- What the Candidate Will Do ---- - Architect the next generation communications platform for Uber across all its current and growing portfolio of global business offereings including third party marketplace offerings. - Actively seek out the toughest technology and engineering problems and solve them with little to no guidance. - Own large opportunities and initiatives and drive clarity, convergence and closure across teams. - Take the larger vision or challenge and distill it down with the leadership team into strategies and plans including trade-offs required to realize the vision. - Be a role model on acting with good judgement and responsibility. Engineers across the organization will look to you on how best to plan and execute on projects. - Provide technical leadership and vision in designing, implementing, testing and rolling out the next generations of our payments systems. - Raise the bar on sustainable engineering by improving best practices, producing best in class of code, documentation, testing and monitoring. - Be a humble mentor and trusted advisor for both our talented team members and passionate leaders alike. Deal with a differences in opinion in a mature and fair way, helping teams to commit and move forward. \-\-\-\- Basic Qualifications ---- - Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering field (e.g. Computer Science, Computer Engineering, etc.) - 10+ years experience designing, implementing large scale, high throughput distributed systems - Advanced, inside-out knowledge of multiple programming languages, data store systems and message queue and data technoligies. We use programming languages like Go, Java, data stores like Cassandra, DynamoDB, Redis and MQs like Kafka- Any programming language is fine. - Deep, industry leading expertise in one or more technology domains and are the "-to" person for one or more areas of their business. - A track record of building large-scale, highly-available systems that solve complex, organizational level business problems. - Expert and hands-on understanding of fault-tolerant systems and multi-datacenter/cloud architectures. - Passion for driving continual improvement initiatives on engineering best practices like coding, testing or monitoring, deployment and post production practices. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed technical documents. - Passionate about helping teams grow by inspiring and mentoring engineers. \-\-\-\- Preferred Qualifications ---- - Deep, industry leading expertise in one or more technology spaces in the communication domain. - Experience working in the Communications industry, working with CPaaS (Communications platform as a service) providers like twilio, infobip, sinch, messagebird etc. For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$252,000 per year - USD$280,000 per year. You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
