Senior Technician Specialist

The Senior Technician Specialist works with the Specialty Catalyst Research & Development team in the polypropylene catalyst business at Grace. The team is a diverse and dynamic team of catalyst specialists supporting all projects within the polypropylene catalyst business. They work directly with a PhD chemist/engineer on innovation projects, new product development, scale-up activities, productivity projects and manufacturing troubleshooting. The Specialty Catalyst labs are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment where the catalyst team synthesizes catalyst prototypes, characterizes catalysts and performance tests catalyst systems.
The position is based on-site in Columbia, Maryland, Monday – Friday and reports through the R&D Manager of Polypropylene Catalyst Design.
Responsibilities Foster a safety-centric culture, fully engaging in all aspects of corporate and work group specific safety initiatives. Synthesize lab-scale polyolefin catalyst samples and other necessary catalyst components. Analyze materials and chemicals with characterization tests. Perform polymer characterization on the materials generated in the polymerization evaluations. Operate, maintain and troubleshoot problems with the catalyst reactors, gloveboxes, analytical equipment, polymerization reactors, purification systems and downstream analysis equipment. Compile, document and manage data from experiments, generating concise and accurate data packages for the projects. Compose laboratory documents such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)s. Demonstrate a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement. Laboratory housekeeping and procurement duties. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related science field. Experience with air-sensitive chemical manipulations. Proficiency in office-based computer software (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.) Experience using strong organization and interpersonal communication skills. Physical Requirements and Environment Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and lift 40 pounds. Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, a lab coat or flame retardant clothing, hearing protection, full face respirator. Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years experience in a chemical laboratory, manufacturing environment or industrial business. Experience with gloveboxes, Schlenk line techniques and assembling Swagelok. Experience with reactive materials or organometallics. Experience with analytical equipment including, maintenance and troubleshooting such as GC, NMR,SEM, particle size measurements.
