Sr. Battery Test Engineer, Safety and Abuse

Role Summary The Rivian Energy Storage System (ESS) Test and Validation team is looking for a Sr. Battery Test Engineer, Safety and Abuse to help develop safe battery systems through development testing and validation efforts. It is a highly cross-functional role that requires coordination between many groups such as manufacturing, design, reliability, systems, and suppliers. The role requires individuals to be proficient at the system level architecture while also being able to zoom in to study the discrete components. An ideal candidate would be someone who has great communication skills, enjoys solving multi-disciplinary technical challenges, and has a passion for learning. Responsibilities Design, execute, and data analysis for Safety and Abuse tests on batteries and high voltage sub-systems (mechanical, electrical, and thermal abuse) Supporting in-depth analyses within the cross-functional disciplines of materials, chemical, mechanical, electrical, thermal, and CAE correlation. Use of fundamental statistical tools such as hypothesis testing, calculating sample sizes, and developing predictive models. Develop data analysis and automation scripts to improve workflow Develop and characterize new test methodologies, fixtures, and analysis methods Coordinate test efforts with cross-functional teams, external labs, and/or suppliers Technical resource for FMEA, Design, CAE, root cause analysis, and DVP discussions Identify and pursue continuous learning opportunities to help ongoing development of technical depth Qualifications BS or MS in material science/engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineer, electrical engineering, or closely related subject 4+ years working in a testing/data collection environment Familiarity with DFSS or DRM tools (such as VOC, FMEA, 5-Why, 8-D) Prior experience working on heat transfer problems, combustion, gas flow analysis, energetic materials, or battery thermal abuse is a plus Prior experience with high voltage batteries and systems is a plus Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Strong technical communication skills (written and verbal) Up to 40% domestic and/or international travel at times Pay Disclosure Salary Range for California Based Candidates: $98,500.00- $123,100.00 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
