Sr. Data Analyst

We are seeking a **_Sr. Data Analyst_** for the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) who will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data on the Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships (BDP) program, research awards programs, and key metrics of the JHU research enterprise – including federal funding data and other university-wide research initiatives. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Research Initiatives, this role is responsible for identifying, gathering, and analyzing data on OVPR and BDP programs and bringing new insights to our various research metrics portfolio.
Given the very public nature of these programs and their importance to University leadership, this position requires a motivated professional with experience in data gathering and analysis, as well as an understanding of the academic research environment. The ideal candidate is a quick learner, curious, innovative, and results-oriented with strong interpersonal skills.
**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**
+ Serve as a core member of the OVPR team, providing data management, collection, and analysis to inform strategic planning and evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives through data-driven research.
+ Must be able to gather large data sets by hand, understand data schemas and layouts, organize materials, and complete assignments according to established standards regarding clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
+ Cultivate and sustain interpersonal relationships to ensure timely exchange of data metrics and updates.
_BDP Program (50%)_
+ The BDP program is the largest interdisciplinary professorship program worldwide, powered by our ambitious effort to recruit one hundred and thirty top researchers to Johns Hopkins University - including a current expansion of the cohort through cluster recruitment, as well as a future expansion in collaboration with the new data science and artificial intelligence institute. The BDPs serve as bridges between distinct groups of researchers; they're translators, conveners, and thought leaders that bring together diverse teams to solve problems, inspiring their colleagues to do the same.
+ Maintain BDP Tableau dashboard with quarterly updates to Bloomberg Philanthropies, ensuring data quality and timely updates throughout the year.
+ Coordinate with BDP Central Administrative Team (BCAT) cluster liaisons to track metrics on cluster hiring and success, as well as equipment and core acquisitions and usage.
+ Lead biennial BDP climate survey process and analysis to assess program satisfaction and identify improvement areas.
+ Generate metrics reports and analytics for senior leadership to guide recruitment and programming decisions.
+ Develop new metrics to evaluate the BDP program’s influence on interdisciplinary research, impact, teaching, and community engagement.
_Research Initiatives (50%)_
+ OVPR leads several initiatives to support and amplify faculty research across the university. Our institutional awards programs – including Catalyst, Discovery, and President’s Frontier Awards – represent the largest institutional commitment to faculty research in the country. OVPR’s Research Development Team (RDT) specializes in helping faculty secure large-scale multidisciplinary and collaborative grants, having facilitated nearly one billion dollars in successful funding. Beyond funding, OVPR cultivates a thriving research community across the entire university that showcases faculty excellence and extends the impact of their discoveries. This position will work collaboratively with members of the OVPR team and other university partners (e.g., Office of Institutional Research) on a variety of initiatives, such as:
+ Analyze complex research metrics and funding patterns across the university using multiple data sources.
+ Create detailed reports and visualizations for university and divisional leadership on research productivity, graduate research program performance, infrastructure utilization, and other areas of strategic importance.
+ Provide data-driven recommendations to track and enhance research capacity, collaboration opportunities, and strategic investment areas.
+ Support divisional/university strategic planning through ad hoc data analyses and reporting (oral and written reports).
+ Lead annual university-wide report metrics compilation – including research programs, institutional awards, faculty achievements, and divisional activity.
+ Perform data collection and analysis of triennial institutional awards return on investment survey and complete report.
+ Maintain departmental metrics database and documentation about tasks and datasets.
+ Support communications team with media analytics.
**Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities**
+ Data management skills using Microsoft Excel or Access—demonstrated familiarity with pivot tables, charting, and formula usage.
+ Intermediate knowledge of statistical software (e.g., SPSS, Stata, R) and/or advanced data visualization tools.
+ Working knowledge of Tableau Desktop.
+ Knowledge of Academic Analytics, Canva, Meltwater, and/or Airtable is a plus.
+ Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects, deadlines, and responsibilities requiring a strong work ethic that stresses the delivery of sound, accurate data.
+ Understanding of the academic research environment including faculty incentives, measures of research impact, the funding ecosystem, and prestigious recognition/awards.
+ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to convey information to OVPR team, faculty, staff, and University officials.
+ Ability to self-motivate and work effectively both independently and cooperatively, with proven success working as a member of a team.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's Degree.
+ Five years experience.
+ Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Master’s or PhD Degree in related discipline preferred.
+ Strong familiarity with the research enterprise and associated data/metrics.
+ Fluent in modern data analytics and data visualization.
