Summary

The Sr. Director of Lab Software Development leads the Lab Software and team for Illumina Lab Services (ILS) with responsibilities in San Diego, Foster City, and Cambridge UK. The role focuses on the design, development and maintenance of the ILS’s software solutions. The role involves strong communication and collaboration with marketing, sales, finance, R&D, and clinical laboratory groups in a fast-paced biotechnology environment to gather business and functional requirements and delivers applications that improve and support business processes.

Key Responsibilities

Directs and controls the strategic software/informatics roadmap to balance regional, business unit, and corporate goals.

Directs the activities of the Lab Software group supporting multiple laboratory information management systems (LIMS and LIS) implementations and web application development, including

close interactions with users of the systems and fast response to software problems that inhibit patient sample testing.

Direct and control the streamlining and harmonization of software and informatics systems across ILS laboratories to drive global lab integration.

Establish and maintain software development standards and best practices for clinical diagnostic products within a regulated QMS environment ensuring compliance with all regulatory

requirements.

Interact and partner with all stakeholders (inside ILS, cross functionally within Illumina and externally to Illumina) to understand the business processes, gather user and QMS requirements

and translate them into software specification, prioritize projects, and actively drive continuous improvement.

Interacts and partners internally and externally with executive level management to provide cohesive direction toward company goals.

Interactions require communication strategy and persuasion skills in negotiating extremely critical matters.

Effectively manage, mentor, and grow a global team.

Develops strategy for engineering/product development for major programs for ILS

Oversees major projects initiatives that have large financial impact to the company through Project Leaders and GIS Management; approves plans and directs resource schedules as well as

project budgets; monitors the product/program/project from initiation through delivery, interfacing with customer on technical matters

Organizes interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the product/program/project on schedule and within budget constraints

Performs other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Talent acquisition activities which include identifying needs of the department, justification for budget to fill positions, coordinating with HR to market the position, review resumes, conduct interviews and identify and recommend a candidate as the potential hire, and employee orientation to the department and company.

Talent development activities which include developing training plans with employees to ensure they have the necessary expertise to successfully perform their jobs, provide ongoing guidance to employees, and career counseling to help employees develop and advance in their careers

Performance management activities include setting performance standards, ensuring employees have appropriate and realistic job goals, providing ongoing feedback about employees’ performance, conducting performance appraisals, including assessing how the employees have performed and how they can improve their performance, developing performance improvement plans if employees’ performance is not adequate and providing rewards for employee accomplishments.

At higher levels of management, establishing and distributing budgets among departments is required.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements

15+ years in software/product development in the life science industry including 10+ years of management experience

Demonstrated experience designing the strategy of and lead the execution of clinical software development

Demonstrated ability to set goals, plan activities and execute on deliverables

Strong analytical skills and ability to tie detailed analysis to larger strategy

Successful experience managing senior level software development professionals. Detail and service oriented individual

Must be able to balance detail with strategy effectively

Experience / Education

Requires Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent, may require an advanced degree, in related field

Broad knowledge of all areas within particular Corporate sub-function or a function within an operation. Typically has depth of technical knowledge in function

derived from experience in non-management and middle management roles.

10 years of experience creating and maintaining software for a clinical diagnostic product (CLIA or FDA), following quality system/design control system in medical

device or related areas

Experience with cloud technologies, microservice architecture, and containerization tools.

Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, Golang, and C#.

Highly experienced in algorithm development, data analysis, and machine learning to support end-to-end operations solutions.

Strong team and mentorship skills.

The estimated base salary range for the Sr. Director, Laboratory Software role based in the United States of America is: $241,600 - $362,400. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
