This role is a part of the Test Development team, providing centralized support to business units with a focus on the design, build, and maintenance of the ground systems, test, and launch facilities across multiple locations.
As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will perform the design, procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of systems associated with space vehicle launch facilities. Typical systems include high pressure gas and cryogenic fluid systems. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Contribute to the conceptual design of new rocket engine test stands and modifications to existing test standsDesign piping and/or tubing systems for pneumatic systems including high pressure gas and cryogenic fluid systemsPerform fluid and structural analysis for new designs or modifications for existing designsSelect components and collaborate on system safety and process hazards analysisGuide creation of 3D models and drawings of designsDraft and review specifications and statements of workManage suppliers and coordinate costs, schedule and technical design requirementsOversee fabrication, installation, cleaning, and commissioning of new or modified fluid systems.Provide input on cost, schedule and technical requirements to internal customersSupport and lead troubleshooting efforts on fluid systemsMentor less experienced engineers and perform peer reviewsOccasional travel may be necessaryMinimum Qualifications
4-year mechanical engineering degree (or similar discipline)8+ years of experience performing design of cryogenic, pneumatic, and hydraulic fluid systemsExperience with standard components, installation and fabrication methods of piping systems (pipe stock, pipe & tube fittings, connections, valves, fasteners, structural members, fitting, welding, etc)Experience with system sizing and performing pressure drop calculations for steady state applications by hand on a component basis and/or by network analysis utilizing software such as AFT Fathom or Arrow or equivalentExperience with specifying and selecting fluid system components (i.e. valves, regulators, cryogenic pumps, relief valves, flow meters, instrumentation, etc.)Experience performing ASME code compliant flexibility analysis using tools such as Bentley AutoPIPE and/or CAESARExperience with CAD programs with a preference for ProEngineer/Creo and ProPipingExperience with data management systems with a preference for WindchillAbility to properly apply ASME BPVC, B31.3, ASTM specs, and API standardsExperience performing risk evaluations and process hazard analyses for fluid systemsAbility to work in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment with changing roles and responsibilitiesMust be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.Preferred Qualifications
Advanced Engineering degreeExperience with in-field oversight of construction, testing, cleaning and/or operations of piping systemsExperience with AUTOCAD or AUTOCAD P&IDExperience with performing transient fluid analysis using Thermal DesktopExperience performing FEA on pressure vessels and piping using FEPipeExperience with designing and specifying bellows, expansion joints, flexible metal hose, and vacuum jacketed pipingExperience with structural hand calculations and analysis software tools (ANSYS, NASTRAN, etc)Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and toleranceKnowledge of AISC and ACI Codes for structural steel and concreteApplications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.
